A Brief History of Wrougton England
Wroughton. Is Situated about three miles south of Swindon, just south of the M4 between junctions 15 &16
In the early 1800s the people of Wroughton were mainly working on the land and live in small thatched cottages or on one of the few farms in the area. There was a village green called the marsh, and a canal with barges taking corn & cheese away, they brought in Slate and farm implements, and later coal.
.
By the end of the 1800s Wroughton was a thriving community, with Numerous shops a school, and a church Tradesmen included a blacksmith, a shoemaker, a wheelwright and a couple of masons and carpenters.
In 1896, there was what became known as the Great Fire of Wroughton the summer was very hot and dry, and the streams were running low. The fire started in the rick-yard of Kings Farm. Furniture and belongings was carried into the streets, about 100 people were made homeless. The week-end after the fire, hundreds of people came to see the ruined cottages, the relief committee took advantage this, and collections were made at the ruins, nearly £6 was donated on Saturday and over £20 on Sunday, with other donations, the total amount came to almost £200,
In the 18th Century, the poor were the responsibility of the whole parish. Each village had a trade setup and run by the "overseers of the poor", in which the unemployed could be given work to do. In Wroughton, this was the wool trade, The Workhouse was the center of the trade. The Poor who were registered paupers were given a bed, a mattress cover stuffed with feathers, and 2 wool blankets. The workhouses were dreaded by the poor, not only for the dirt and disease but also the devastating fevers that swept through them.
Because no one would employ mothers of illegitimate children many spent their whole childhood in the workhouse To get food and shelter for herself and her child. The mother had to go before the magistrates, and swear out a Bastardy Bond to identity the father. The choice was simple - give his name, or starve. the father was then made by law to pay the Poor Law Union, an agreed amount each year for the child. There are two such a bond made out against Thomas Palmer by Dinah Gingell. See Official Documents page.
Dinah had four children by Thomas but never married. Both Thomas and Dinah spent time in the workhouse. The law was changed in 1834.
In 1851, public health inspectors visited the village to submit a report and recommendations for improvements needed, with regard to bad sanitation and the polluted water supply. One of the reports mentions :-
3 Offensive pigsties of Thomas Palmer, to be removed from the bakery. Altogether over 30 offensive privies, were reported and one poor man, Thomas Norris, is reported as having no privy at all
(There was 2 Thomas Palmers in Wroughton at this time. But this one, was not Dinah Gingall's partner). This Palmer family appear to have been baker's in Wroughton from at least 1816 until 1855, under Robert Palmer, they had a shop in the High Street. which was destroyed by the great fire of Wroughton in 1896. It was rebuilt by the Phillimore Family

On this occasion Mr. Mirehouse, of Angle, and the crew of the lifeboat, did some brave work in rescuing the crew of the unfortunate ship, which ultimately became a total wreck.
