*The first two children's details are taken from church baptismal records while the later children's records are taken from civil birth registers. Our cut off point for Caherconlish church records is December 1899. This is why I cannot provide you with details of Sponsors,
** According to a civil death record, Mary died on the 15th of January: 1907. She died of "Acute Bronchitis 10 days" She was 6 years of age when she died. Her father Mortimer Leahy notified her death.
On a number of the above children's records Mortimer's occupation was recorded as Feather Merchant. And as you will notice as we travel back to previous generations of Leahys, Feather Merchants seem to be a popular family occupation.
I was also able to locate the family of Mortimer Leahy in the 1901 Census. Copies of it are enclosed.
The details contained in Mortimer Leahys marriage record especially information pertaining to Mortimer's fathers name enabled me to continue my search for the previous generations of Leahys. Mortimer's marriage record states that his father was John Leahy.
Details of John Leahy's family are as follows:
MARRIAGE
John Leahy and Mary Russell were married in the Roman Catholic Church of Inch St. Lawrence in Caherconlish & Caherline on the l0th of August 1870. Due to the fact that this marriage took place after 1864, we c; search civil records, which as you will note contain a great deal of pertinent information, much more so than would appear on a church record. John Leahy was recorded as a Feather Merchant. He was from Cappamore and aged 19 at the time of his marriage. His father was recorded as Morty Leahy whose occupation was also a Feather Merchant. Mary Russell was 20 years of age at the time of her marriage. She originated from Caherconlish and she also was a Feather Merchant as was her father Michael Russell. The witnesses to this marriage were recorded as John Finucane and Mary Bourke. The couple then went on to have several children baptised in the Roman Catholic Parish of Caherconlish
All dates are baptismal except those with an asterisk. These are civil dates of birth due to the illegibility of the baptismal dates on the original registers.

I also believe that I have located John Leahy and his family in the 1901 Census. However there are some inaccuracies, as you will notice. For instance John Leahys age is recorded as 38 and his son Michael is recorded as being 24. Obviously not possible. One can conclude that John was either unsure of his age (unlikely) or that it was simply recorded incorrectly (very possible). You will also notice that his wife is recorded as Eliza Leahy and not Mary. He very possibly married twice even though I was unable to locate a second marriage record.
I cannot stand over this Census but it is too coincidental to be ignored, primarily due to the fact that his occupation is recorded as Feather dealer and I have also located the death record of a Mary Leahy of Caherconlish, who died on the 16th November 1888 at the age of 36, during child birth "haemorrhage from Uterus 8 hours". If this is Mary wife of John Leahy, it leaves the door open for Elizabeth being the second wife
However we also have the option that Mary was simply baptised Elizabeth Mary and although she only appears as Mary on all other records, perhaps the official nature 0f the Census prompted her to state her full name. It is unfortunately something that we cannot prove.
Once more the marriage record 0f John Leahy and Mary Russell provided me with valuable information that enabled me to continue tracing back into yet another generation 0f Leahys. According to John Leahy's marriage entry, he was from Cappamore and his father was Morty Leahy. Details 0f Morty Leahys marriage and children are as follows:
MARRIAGE
Martin (pet name Morty) Leahy and Mary Finucane were married in the Roman Catholic Parish 0f Cappamore, on the 7th 0f September 1844 where marriage records date from 1843 and baptismal records from 1842. The witnesses to this marriage were recorded as Thomas Ryan and John Finucane.
The couple went on to have several children baptised in the Roman Catholic Parish 0f Cappamore
