Walden Conservative Club is fast establishing itself as a popular
social venue for the people of the town. The Club boasts members
of all ages who enjoy the benefits of a large friendly bar area
offering competitively priced drinks in a relaxed environment. Freshly
prepared bar food is also available during the lunchtime opening
hours of 1200 noon until 2pm and evenings from 7pm until 9.30pm.
The club
is open until midnight Monday to Saturday and is conveniently situated
in the heart of the historic town. The town is in the Essex District
of Uttlesford, described by The Sunday Times in 2002 as being "The
Most Desirable Place to Live in England."
Access to
the town is very easy, by car via the M11 or by rail to Audley End
Railway Station which is just over 2 miles from town but has a reliable
taxi service to meet incoming trains. Stansted airport is less than
30 minutes drive from the town.
The City
of Cambridge is only 25 minutes away via the A11 with Newmarket
approximately the same. The Club is located about 100 metres from
the Market Square, which provides convenient parking in the evenings
and on Sundays.
The Club
is located in a very impressive Georgian building with a large,
enclosed walled garden with a well
laid out lawn and flower beds. There are two bar areas, the Lounge
Bar where hot meals are served, the Sunday
Roast has become a popular attraction at The Club and members
are advised to book in advance.
The Saloon
Bar has a television set, mainly for sporting events and
a gaming machine offering a £250 jackpot prize. The Saloon
Bar has access to the walled garden
and patio area, which are very popular during the summer
months and are the venue for barbecues and occasional live music
events.
The recently
rejuvenated and air-conditioned Club function room, with its newly
constructed self-contained bar, is known as The
Garden Room and is the venue for most Club
entertainment. It is also the meeting place for organisations, including
the local branch of the Royal
British Legion, the Bingo Club
and on
two evenings a week it is used by the Bridge
Club.
The Club
"Committee Room" is located upstairs and is used by The
Lions, Lionesses and The Fishing
Club in addition to the Club Committee. The Lionesses
meet on the 1st Monday of each month and the Lions
meet on the 2nd Monday.
The Club
has three Snooker
teams who play in the Saffron
Walden & District Snooker League. Matches are played on
Tuesday evenings but the match-size table and Pool table are available
for members to use during Club opening hours. The Club also has
teams in a local Darts and Pool League. Since 2006 the Club has
also participated in the Ladies Darts League.
On the edge
of the town is Audley End House owned by Lord Braybrooke and managed
by English Heritage. The House is a very popular tourist attraction
and in addition to historical re-enactments and gardeners' weekends,
holds very popular open air music events in the grounds during summer
weekends. The Prince of Wales has taken a keen interest in the organic
garden in the grounds of the House. (See "Places to Visit"
