Letter from the Chairman taken from our latest
Cut-
We in this South East corner have had a good dry and sunny summer and autumn. However,
not only have gardens and vegetable plots suffered but what water we had in the canal
has reached an all time low. Fortunately the pump installation project is progressing
-
Leases have also been agreed between Network Rail and Gravesham Borough Council in relation to the Mark Lane to the Swing Bridge section of the canal allowing checks and measurements to be made to prepare the way for dredging. Thanks to the owner’s permission, we have also been able to excavate the canal lock at the east end of the canal basin and ascertained its state thus helping to inform the decisions being made about the Albion Parade Regeneration Project.
To further promote our restoration programme our static display team have erected their impressive displays at the newly refurbished library at Mackenzie Way, Marling Cross and at Strood Library. The more such sites the better. Let me know if you have any ideas.
Being a local organisation we are planning our part in the Gravesham Heritage Fortnight 2010. And, continuing our local commitments, we now have a regular monthly community service team working on the canal.
As our tasks and involvement increase we need your continued support. Please help by filling in the enclosed form and renewing your membership for next year or by volunteering. Hopefully, I will meet up with you before, but if not, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year.
Brian Macknish
