His first wife was Mary Ann Dawkins who divorced him in 1897. It appears he lived for some years in an unmarried relationship with Emma King having four children with her – William, Gertrude, Minnie, Frederick and Elsie – before marrying in 1899. At the time of his marriage and in various census Henry is described as a musician and indeed he is listed in a number of local directories as a music teacher based at 351 Castle Street, Hillfields, Coventry. It appears Henry was originally apprenticed to his father as a watchmaker but rebelled and became a musician. However by the 1901 Census Henry is listed as a watchmaker.

Emma King was born in Allesley in Warwickshire on Christmas Day 1856, the daughter of John King (born Bubbenhall, Warwickshire in around 1815) and Selina Hopkins (possibly born Baginton, Warwickshire around 1815).
