Say ‘Coventry’
to many people and they will immediately think of Lady Godiva or the
terrible destruction of the Blitz in 1940. These are important elements
of the story of Coventry - a city with a rich and long history spread
over 1000 years. Since others have done it so well, it seems silly to
try and attempt a history of Coventry so here are some of my favourite
websites on the city.
Covkid
Created by local
historian John Russell this site is your first stop if you think your
family came from Coventry. Contains several useful databases including
lists of freeman and directory entries which can be searched by name.
All this and lots of fascinating information about Coventry and its
history.
Historic
Coventry
If you want to know
what Coventry was like before the Blitz this is the site for you. Rob
Orland has cleverly created animated maps showing the streets of Coventry
changing over the centuries and photographs of Coventry landmarks then
and now. It’s hearbreaking to see how many fine buildings have
been lost due to the Blitz and bad planning.
SpON-LINE
This site is a community
site for the residents of the Spon End area but does have a history
and heritage section.
