London and Middlesex
In the 19th century there was a mass exodus of workers from the counties outside London into the capital. Those immigrants from Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk tended to settle in the East End i.e. Whitechapel, Mile End and Stepney and gradually move out as London expanded into Stratford, East and West Ham. Therefore most of the trees below will prove to derive from Essex, Suffolk or Norfolk. Much work remains to be done with almost none of the London parishes searched. Early Caustons in London about 1350 were rich merchants and a continuing presence in London is likely. The situation is confused by the well off living both in London and in some county mansion as well.
Two these families had many prominent citizens. The London Printing family (headed by ID 1452) founded the large printing company Sir Joseph Causton and Sons Ltd (see newsletter no 6). It also included an MP. The other prominent family (headed by ID 848) included merchants a minor poet and many clergymen.
