Ray Rigby was born in St Helens, Lancashire and joined the Royal Air Force in April 1961 as an Aircraft Apprentice. He started his basic training to become an Electrical Fitter (Air) with other members of the 98th Entry at No 1 School of Technical Training at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire.

Ray was bright, cheerful and a friendly individual who excelled in athletics as a fine sprinter and was a member of RAF Halton's Athletics Team. During his year with the 98th Entry, Ray was noted for his personal drive, his sense of humour and his ability to get on with others. Undoubtedly, he would have had a successful career in the RAF but for an unexpected and sudden illness in February 1962 which led to his being medical discharged later that year. Sadly, Ray was diagnosed as suffering from a brain tumour which necessitated major surgery on a number of occasions over the years from 1962 onwards.

Despite his debilitating illness and mobility problems, Ray's strength of character and mind meant that he was able to maintain as full a life as possible with his family. He will be remembered with fondness by fellow members of the 98th Entry.

Ray died peacefully at his home in Camberley, Surrey on 18 July 2005. He is survived by his wife Mary.
