From the notes of Alfred John Boon: My mother was of Irish extraction. She was born in 1876. Her father, Martin Downes, was a Corporal in the Army Medical Corps. He was born about 1840 and died prior to 1901. My Grandmother, I think, was Bridget. Bridget lived with her daughter Ann in Crescent Road, Plumstead. She would visit each of her locally based children, who would each give her a shilling a week. Her pension must have been small (did she have an Army pension?) She died about 1920. I was there when she died, and I can remember the death smell. I smelled it many times after.
