According to family legend William Gollop (1783) was a Jewish Rabbi who fell in love with a Gentile and converted to Christianity. The bible is believed to have been his. However, Dr Kenneth E.Collins, an authority on the early Jewish community in Glasgow, has told me that there is no record of a Rabbi Gollop in Glasgow. Subsequent research leads me to believe that if there is any truth in this story it is more likely that it was William's wife, Rebecca, who was Jewish. Andrew Strutt has sent me a copy of the date of birth entries in the Strutt family Bible. The birth date information was entered in the Bible by Emily Blanche Strutt on 12 July 1895. Some of the names and dates do not coincide with the evidence I have, which is probably understandable given the time lapse between the events and when Emily entered them in the Bible. I have entered this information as it stands, with a cautionary note where necessary.
