Career summary.

24 years experience in industrial catalysis research and development and process optimization in
ICI Petrochemicals, ICI Chemicals & Polymers Ltd, Air Products & Chemicals plc.

Wide experience of process technology, including batch and continuous processes and many types of commercial scale reactor.  Direct experience in R&D for manufacture of many chemical products including petrochemicals, chemical intermediates, solvents, and fine chemicals. Accumulated knowledge of many more processes.  Familiar with chemical plants in Europe, Japan and the USA.  Additional experience in undesirable reaction processes at process fluid-solid interfaces, e.g., corrosion, product degradation, carburization etc.

Examples: EO, alkylamines, DMF, DMAC, specialty amines, alkanolamines

Previously an ICI company expert in the monitoring and optimization of process catalyst performance and the study and minimization of catalyst decay. Member of the ICI Catalysis Club – a global network, undertaking technical and strategic evaluation of new developments, internal and external collaborative research. Founder-editor of the ICI catalysis newsletter.

Presentations at many company workshops and training events in ICI, Air Products, Akzo Catalysts (now Albemarle), Johnson Matthey, BP, Huntsman, Statoil, Davy Process Technology, Eurokin meetings (at Shell, Akzo Nobel, IFP).

Visiting lecturer at several UK universities:
undergraduate courses in physical chemistry (thermodynamics, kinetics and mechanism, applied catalysis) and specialist postgraduate courses in catalyst performance monitoring and catalyst decay.

Honorary Senior Research Fellow, University of Glasgow, Scotland.

Honorary Secretary of the RSC Applied Catalysis Group from 2004 to 2009.

            Conference Convener:

(i) ‘Catalysis for a sustainable future’, IUPAC Congress, Glasgow, August 2009

(ii) ‘Challenges in catalysis for pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals II’, SCI London, October 2009

Recent consultancy work: supporting techno-commercial case for academic grant application; design and testing of homogeneous process reaction kinetic model; techno-commercial evaluation of catalysis IP for venture capital company; author of study on ‘catalyst deactivation’ for ‘The Catalyst Group’; presentations and specialist consultancy on problems in catalysis and catalyst decay for many international companies (novel catalyst development, catalyst testing, process optimization); agent for sale of surplus industrial catalyst charge; review of measurement and modelling of industrial catalyst decay for the Eurokin consortium (test procedures, comprehensive literature review, analysis of gaps and needs).

Qualifications:   Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry

Chartered Scientist, Chartered Chemist,

D.Phil., BA in Natural Sciences, Chemistry (Oxford, 1st class Hons)
