Nile Cruise

21 – 28 January 2008

This was a very different kind of holiday for us – no walking!  We very much enjoyed cruising the Nile and seeing The Valley of the Kings and all the amazing temples.  It was hard to believe how well preserved all these places were.  Below are just a few of our photographs.

Our ship was the Etoile du Nil III. It was very relaxing cruising down The Nile

The Temple of Horus, the falcon God in Edfu was our first experience of Ancient Egypt.

We saw the temple at Kom Ombo at night

This is Philae Temple which had been moved to Agilika Island, the Island of Philae having been submerged following the building of the High Dam at Aswan

While moored at Aswan we had a felucca ride going close to the Botanical Gardens

The highlight of the holiday was the visit to Abu Simbel.  The two temples here are amazingly well preserved and it’s hard to believe they’ve been moved stone by stone to prevent their being submerged under Lake Nasser, following the building of the High Dam.  We weren’t allowed to take photos but the colours inside were quite stunning.

Here’s Ted as we’re about to sail again, leaving Aswan to return to Luxor.

Ted had a birthday while we were on board and the chef had made a cake.  After dinner we enjoyed Egyptian dancers.

We visited three of the tombs in The Valley of The Kings and again there were some stunning colours but we were not allowed to take photographs.

At The Temple of Hatchepsut, the female pharaoh we were able to capture some remarkable carvings and colouring.

Karnak is the largest temple complex ever built in the world.  There is still much excavation to be done here.

Not far away from Karnak was Luxor Temple – much smaller – but very impressive.  The two temples used to be connected by a stone processional street lined with sphinxes.  You can see these near Luxor on the picture above.

The last sunset at Luxor.
