This is a section of an article entitled "The Home Guard as Saboteur" which was based on a lecture by Capt. W.F. Crisp (Home Guard Instructors School, Hurlingham). It appeared in a magazine named "Defence - The Services' Magazine" and this particular part was in the April 1941 edition.

How to Kill Silently

Now for one or two methods of dealing with SENTRIES. The cleanest and nicest — if one may use that expression — method of dealing with sentries is undoubtedly the knife, correctly applied. Cinemas and theatres have taught us that the way to use a knife is a stab between the shoulder blades. This is not recommended. The correct way to use this weapon is shown in sketch "B" (see below). The best blade for this should be from 7½ ins. to 8 ins., preferably double-edged.

The German helmet is a particularly efficient one; therefore, nothing can, be done about a blow on the nape of the neck while lie is wearing his helmet.

Failing everything else, remember that your piece of lead pipe when applied vigorously to the lumbar region will paralyse a man. After he is paralysed, it is up to you. . . .

A blow with the side of the palm of the right hand, right into the Adam's apple will either kill your man or certainly cause insensibility. The Ju-Jitsu variation of this blow is with the side of the palm or the top lip under the nose with an upward motion.

The cheese cutter commends itself as a weapon because in the event of your applying the method successfully, you succeed in killing your man twice!

The wire is looped from the back over the sentry's head to catch him across the Adam's apple. The hands are then crossed at the back, causing a loop in the wire. A strong upward and backward pull aided by the knee in the small of the back will throttle and break the neck at the base of the skull.

This can be practised quite easily at home by substituting darning wool for wire on your cheese cutter. Although the darning wool will break when pulled, it is as well to get your assistant to wear a large woollen scarf to avoid being cut.

Remember that an irregular must try and develop a character which combines Frankenstein, Jules Verne, and H. G. Wells. Caution must be your watchword, although very often you will find that a "soupçon" of audacity will make the difference between success and failure. Let your slogan be:

"He who schemes and runs away, lives to scheme another day."
