STOCKPORT COMMUNITY CYCLING CLUB
Home ABOUT US
Stockport Community Cycling Club was formed in 1999 to fill a gap in the cycling world. The aim was not to be elitist but to welcome everyone. The original idea was to concentrate on under 16s and novice adults and the Club operated in this way from a fixed base until 2005.
In 2005 the decision was made to change direction and to create club for the more inexperienced rider new to cycling or returning after some time away. . As most families with cycles had some means of transporting them it was decided to "go mobile" and to meet every other Saturday at a different starting point so that more varied routes could be used. It was also decided that every few weeks the ride would visit a trail further afield to vary the experience even more. All Saturday rides are mainly off-road on easily ridden tracks and and roadwork is kept to a minimum. During the summer months, the Club holds regular Wednesday evening rides aimed at beginners and we now hold a monthly Sunday road ride over about 30 miles . There is also a monthly 50 mile eXtra ride for the more experienced.
There is a joining fee of £2 and a ride fee of 50p. Anyone wishing to pay in advance for 10 rides (£5) will receive 2 bonus rides and for 20 rides (£10) will receive 5 bonus rides.
The Club focuses on more mature riders who want some moderate exercise at an easy pace but families are also welcome. Many of our riders come as individuals and soon enjoy the friendly company. We do not have an official minimum age but we would suggest that anyone under the age of 9 may find the rides a bit difficult. Certainly the Sunday rides are for cyclists with more experienced and prepared to ride on the roads.
For those who do not have transport or have access to a cycle, the Club has a small stock of bikes to lend for the ride until you can buy your own and transport can often be arranged if we know beforehand.
The Club operates independently but is supported by both Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and NHS Stockport and works with them to promote cycling in the Borough.
Rides are taken by accredited British Schools Cycling Association off-road leaders who also hold first aid certificates. If you are interested in becoming a leader, courses are held when necessary.
In 2008 Jim was awarded CTC Volunteer of the Year award in recognition of the continuing success of the Club. Since 2005 over 225 riders have ridden with the Club and many have become regulars.
Whilst the Club does not actively encourage racing, we are affiliated to the necessary cycling bodies to enable competitors to race in the Club name.
