Adjustment of early rear brake calipers

Taken from an original @ http://www.isham-research.co.uk/quattro

Diag.1 Handbrake 'OFF'

Factory set for fitting with new discs and pads (thickness - 44mm)

DO NOT operate handbrake lever until caliper is fitted and bled

Press foot pedal 5-10 times to adjust the piston self adjuster

Slacken cable fit and adjust to take up slack but ensure the lever returns to its stop.

Diag.2 Handbrake 'ON'

With new discs and pads fitted you should have a good handbrake, however if the factory

settings are wrong or old discs and/or pads have been used the piston will have extended

to its maximum with no effct. On release of the handbrake the piston will remain out.

Diag.3 Handbrake 'OFF'

Play now between cam and rod - you will not get a handbrake solution, gently push the

piston back to remove any play (Diag 1 now proceed to Diag 4)

Diag.4 Handbrake 'OFF'

Measure the total thickness of discs and pads (example - 39mm) add 1mm for interface and

now adjust caliper to suit 40mm by rotating the piston - Anticlockwise (90deg = 1mm)

fit as in diag 1 instructions.

Diag.5 Handbrake 'ON'

Correctly adjusted for the example in diag 4

NOTES

If you are fitting new discs and/or pads to this type of caliper you will have to wind

the piston in clockwise and gently push to remove any play then follow Diag 1 instructions for adjusting procedures.

As pads wear, the self adjuster built into the piston will take up normal wear.
