No point in a "how I done it" here - just go and read the ReRanch stuff mentioned on the Repairs page.

I will say that doing the dark "burst" wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I used a spray gun, set to deliver paint quite slowly to give control. Doing it with aerosols I suspect would be harder to get right first time.

Doing around the (glued) neck joint was a pig.

Adding the gold was the easy part. Light coats and patience...

(The shallow pickup routings were done to provide scope to lower the rebuilt, possibly more powerful  pickups. You can also see the area where wood was scavenged to repair the body - not neat, but it'll be hidden under scratch plate.)

Two attempts to get headstock right - quite easy to get too big a brown band.
Next step in this part of the process was doing the nitrocellulose lacquer clear coats. No pictures, but see the next page for the result.

Again, patience and follow the ReRanch method. I did about 25 coats in all, with the new headstock logo being applied after the first couple of coats.

After the final coats, left for 10 days to harden up a bit, then wet sanded with 1200 grit (would have used 2000, but couldn't find any) then left a few more days before doing the first polish with G10 compound.
