The Malcolmsons

Ian's father, John was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire to a single mum, Margaret Malcolmson, a comparatively  rare thing in these days, the 1920s.  He had 1 brother and 1 sister.  John lived in George Street with his grandmother, his mum and siblings.   John's sister, Annie, moved to Percy Main near Newcastle Upon Tyne when she married George Best.  They had no children.  Annie re-married after George died.  Annie died in 1999.  John's brother Jim, married his first wife, Tilly, in Johnstone and had three children, 2 daughters and a son.  They settled first in Kendal, then Kidderminster.  He became a widower at a fairly young age and re-married but it didn't last.  He married for a third time and settled in Malawi where he died at the age of 57.

John Malcolmson was a bright scholar, so much so that a teacher visited his mum to try and persuade her to keep him at school,  but times were hard back in these days and John had to go out to work as soon as he was fourteen.  Anyway they war was starting so it wasn't long before he had to join up.  Being a bright chap he was in the REME. He served in various parts of the Middle East.  He served his apprentice with Young's Buses however by 1949 he found himself employed by A & F Stoddard & Co. in Elderslie as a Loom Tuner.  By this time he was also dating Ian's mum, Helen Moore Stirling who lived in Paisley.  She was a Comptometer Operator.  They married on the 31st July 1950 in St George's East Church in Paisley.  Helen's parents were very regular church goers.  They were only blessed with one child, Ian Malcolmson in 1952. John sadly died on 15th December, 2001

John's grandparents were George Crawford Malcolmson and Annie Morrison Watson.  Unfortunately very little is known about the George Malcolmson's parents. It's believed that George and his parents, John and Sarah hailed from Ireland.  So far they have not been traced although Sarah did die in Scotland in Glasgow in 1899 having re-married to an Archibald Armstrong.  According to the 1901 Census George was born in England about 1871. In April 1901 George and Annie were living at 9 Collier St. in Johnstone.  Margaret, their first child was born in 1901.  They had another two children,  Henrietta in 1902 and Robert in 1903.  Ettie, as she was known, married James Easdon and settled in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire .  Robert married Jessie Nevitt and stayed in Johnstone till his death in 1965.  George Malcolmson achieved dubious notoriety when his name appeared in the June 22nd edition of the 'Johnstone Advertiser'. I quote "George Malcolmson, labourer, Collier St. forfeited 7s 6d for being drunk and incapable".  George died on the 10th March, 1911.

Annie Morrison Watson was born in 1872 in Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland.  She appeared on the census in 1881 in Abbey District, Paisley residing at 7 Collier Street in Johnstone.  She also appeared on the census in 1891 in Johnstone & Elderslie district. She was a Flax Mill Hand about 15 July 1897 in Johnstone.  She died on 22 April 1940 in Johnstone and was buried in Abbey Road Cemetery, Elderslie.

The Watsons, Mathies and Orrs

Ian's Great Grandmother's Parents were Robert Watson and Jean (sometimes Jane) Mathie. Robert Watson was born between 1829 and 1833 in Johnstone (son of Alexander Watson and Jean Morrison) He lived in 7 Church Street in 1857 when he married Jean Mathie.  Robert was a bachelor whereas Jean was a widow. His occupation was a Gas Work Labourer. By 1871 he was a Fireman and he lived at 3 Napier Street in Kilbarchan.  1881 finds the family in 7 Collier St and he was an Engine Man at a Lace Factory.  Robert changed jobs regularly and in 1891 he was a Flax Thread Dyer.  By 1897 when Annie married George Malcolmson the family lived in 11 Collier Street.

He married Jane Mathie (daughter of John Mathie and Mary Orr) on 17 February 1857 in Elderslie, Johnstone (as is common with the name Jane she was often called Jean).  She was a widow according to the marriage certificate.   Jane Mathie was born about May 1826 and was christened on 4 June 1826 in Abbey, Paisley (Probably Kilbarchan). Her name was Jean on the christening entry.  She resided in Church Street in 1857 in Johnstone.  She appeared on the census in 1861 in Johnstone, living in 7 Church St. with husband, and 4 children (2 by a previous marriage).  She appeared on the census in 1871 in Kilbarchan.  She appeared on the census in 1881 in Abbey, Renfrew.  She resided 7 Collier Street in 1881 in Johnstone.  She appeared on the census in 1891 in Johnstone & Elderslie.  She resided 11 Collier Street in 1897 in Johnstone.  Jane died on the 24th April, 1904.  Robert died over two years later on 27th November, 1906.  Robert Watson and Jane (sometimes Jean) Mathie had the following children:

               i.           Alexander Watson was born about 1858 in Johnstone, Renfrew, Scotland.  He appeared on the census in 1861 in Johnstone, 3 years old.  He appeared on the census in 1871 in Kilbarchan and in 1881 in Abbey, Renfrew, Scotland (Abbey district included Johnstone). Alexander married Anne Maitland on 29th December, 1882 in Johnstone.  He was 24 and she was 21.  Anne was born on 4th August 1861 to parents William Maitland & Rosina Woods "Rosey".  In 1901 they were living at 36 High Street which in 2002 is opposite the Clydesdale Bank (probably where the Video Hire shop is). Alexander was away from home at the time of the Census. They had at least 6 children.  Alexander was an Engine Fitter and died on 11th October, 1912

ii.          Robert Watson was born about 1860 in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland.  In 1861 Census entry he was 1 year old.  He died on 1st April, 1864.

iii.         Jane Watson was born on 11 February 1862 in Abbey (paisley), Renfrew.  According to the 1871 Census another Jane was born about 1866?

vi.         Margaret Watson was born on 12 April 1866.  Margaret married Michael McConnachie in 1891. They had two daughters.  One of the daughters, Jeanie is the mother of a cousin researcher, Irene Mitchell who lives in Canada. Margaret died on 31st May, 1904 in Gourock.

vii.        Charlotte Logan Watson was born on 18 April 1870 in Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland.  IGI entry gives mothers christian name as Jane  She appeared on the census in 1871 in Kilbarchan, 1 year old and again on the 1881 census for Abbey, Renfrew.  In 1881 She resided at 7 Collier Street.  She died in 1887, 17 years old.

Jean Morrison was born about 1801 in Lanark, Scotland.  From an 1851 Census entry found.  She died after 1857.  (Was not entered as 'Deceased'  on Son's marriage certificate).  Alexander Watson and Jean Morrison had the following children:

The Stirlings (The Malcolmsons)

Ian's mother was Helen Moore Stirling was born on 17 May 1926 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA in the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital, City of Cleveland (from her birth certificate).  She came to Scotland with her mother about 1929 for a holiday.  It turned out to be a 'permanent' holiday as they never returned to America.  The Wall Street crash occurred and resulted in the far reaching Depression which started in America in October 1929.  Helen's father, my grandfather, decided it would be better to come home to Scotland.  Helen's sister, Moira, remembers her mother saying that was less that pleased as he got rid of all their good china etc. but managed to bring back Helen's Doll's pram which was eventually passed on to Moira. Helen died on 22 October 1984 in hospital in Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland.  She was named after Great Grandmother Helen Millar Moore.

Ian's Stirling Grandparents

Frederick Hope Pattison Stirling was born in August 1894 in Bridgeton, Glasgow.  Evidence appears to show that he was named after Frederick Hope Pattison, an army veteran, who was a lieutenant in the 33rd (1st Yorkshire West Riding) Regiment of Foot - 'The Havercake Lads' - during the Waterloo campaign.  His namesake fought at Quatre Bras and Waterloo.  In 1868/1869, more than 50 years after the battles the lieutenant recorded his memories in a series of letters to his grandchildren.  These were published in 1870 in the form of a book.  There may be a closer connection because Fred's mother's family the 'Harts' originally hailed from Old Kilpatrick where the veteran  lived during the later part of his life (he lived at Mountblow, only a few hundred yards from Old Kilpatrick Railway Station).  Frederick Stirling died on Dec 24th 1965.  He was married to Helen Moore (Nell) McQueen on 17 August 1925 in New York.

Helen Moore (Nell) McQueen
was born on 31 October 1894.  She died in December 1970 in Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland.  She was knocked down by a car while she was crossing the road.  Frederick Hope Pattison Stirling and Helen Moore (Nell) McQueen had the following children: Ian's mother, Helen Moore Stirling and Moira Hart Stirling (still living).

Ian's 'Stirling' Great-Grandparents

Robert Stirling and Martha Hart

Robert Stirling was born about 1858 in Cambuslang, Lanark, Scotland (his place of birth was taken from the 1881 Census entry).  It is suspected that he was in fact adopted by the 'Parents' recorded on the marriage certificate. His Marriage Certificate Showed him to be 26 in 1885.  On Scot's Origins there is a Bridgeton birth entry and a Kirkintilloch birth entry.  The IGI has Bridgeton entry but no Kirkintilloch entry.  IGI Bridgeton entry has wrong parents.  The Kirkintilloch connection may be correct because there is a LDS & Scots Origins entry for the marriage of his parents in Kirkintillock in 1850 (also one for Cadder in Lanark).   He appeared on the census in 1881 in Barony and his recorded age was 22.  He resided at 6 Greenlodge Terrage as lodger in 1881 in Barony.  He was the only lodger in a house with a family of 5 called Findlayson.  This is the same address as on his Marriage Certificate.  He was a Confectionary Warehouseman in 1885 in Bridgeton.  Robert married married two times; first time was to Martha Hart on 16 June 1885 in Bridgeton.

Martha Hart was born in 1861 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow.  (Guess from downloaded info.)  She resided at 45 Harvie St. in 1881 in Barony.  She was a Cotton Powerloom Weaver between 1881 and 1885.  She resided 696 Springfield Road before 1885 in Bridgeton, Glasgow.  Martha was the informant on her father's death certificate who died 8 days after she was married.  Martha died about 1903 when her daughter Marion McGregor Stirling was about 14 years old (not proven).  Robert Stirling and Martha Hart had the following children:

                             i.   Mary Nimmo Stirling was born about 1886.  She appeared on the census in 1891 in Bridgeton, Glasgow. Mary married Danny Taylor and had a large family,

ii.   Robert Dick Stirling was born on 8 December 1887 in Bridgeton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.  He appeared on the census in 1891 in Bridgeton, Glasgow.  Robert married Mary Robertson Arneil. They  immigrated in 1923 to New Zealand.  On the "Corinthic".  He died on 14 May 1980 in Timaru, New Zealand.

iii.   George Stirling immigrated about 1947 to Canada.  Lived in Glasgow till after WW2 then went to Toronto, Canada. George married Euphemia MacCallum.

iv.   Marion McGregor Stirling was born in 1890.  She appeared on the census in 1891.  She immigrated to Canada.  She was also known as Minnie.  Married & went to Toronto.  Minnie married William James Norman on 15th April 1916.  They had at least 7 children.

                           v.   Walter Hart Stirling was born in 1891 in Bridgeton, Glasgow.  He died in 1893.

vi.   Frederick Hope Pattison Stirling (Ian's grandfather).

Robert's 2nd marriage was to Margaret Scott sometime after 1903.  This was also Margaret's 2nd marriage.  There was one child, Isabella Stirling "Aunt Bell".  Isabella married William Miller

William McQueen & Helen Moore.

Finally he married Mary Abercromby on 14 June 1850 in Cadder, Lanark or in Kirkintilloch.  Mary Abercromby was born about 1802 and died on the 5th August 1875 (father was Alexander Abercromby).  William Stirling and Mary Abercromby had at least I child, Robert Stirling (Ian's great grandfather).  However, his parents were over 50 years old so obviously not his 'blood' parents but a family connection is likely.

Walter Hart was born about 1822 in Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland.  Cannot find an IGI or Scots origin entry.  He lived at 72 Rose Street about 1861 in Glasgow.  He appeared on the census in 1881 in Barony, aged 59, Place of Birth Kilpatrick.  This puts his year of birth at about 1822.  He resided at 45 Harvie St. in 1881 in Barony.  He was a Cotton Warper (Coloured) in 1881.  He died on 23rd June, 1885 in Bridgeton in 696 Springfield Rd shortly after his daughter, Martha's wedding to Robert Stirling.  He first married Agnes Thomson Sneddon in 1843, registered in Gorbals, Glasgow.  The IGI indicates a child, Walter, born in the Gorbals in 1844.  He then married Mary Jane Nimmo on 15 July 1861 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland.

Mary Jane Nimmo was born in 1829 in Ireland.  She was a Cotton Yarn Winder in 1861.  She resided at 72 Rose Street about 1861 in Glasgow.  She appeared on the census in 1881, aged 52, born in Ireland living at 45 Harvie St.  She resided at 696 Springfield Road about 1885 in Glasgow.  She appeared on the census in 1891 in Bridgeton, aged 65.  Walter Hart and Mary Jane Nimmo had the following children:

He had children by all 3 women. In addition there is strong evidence that James had an illegitimate son to his 2nd wife before his first marriage.

James and his first wife Jessie had the following children;

i.        Robert McQueen born 18 Mar, 1853.

ii.       Janet McQueen born 11 Apr 1855, Twynholm, Kirkcudbright, Scotland.  Janet had an illegitimate child, David Sherman, born 1880 in Dumfries.  The father was David Sherman.

He married Elizabeth McKen Wylie (daur of Thomas Wylie & Janet Jamison) on 29th Dec, 1876 in Dumfries Town.

ii.      Helen McQueen was born on 28 March 1863 in Dumfries, Scotland.  She died an infant..

              v.    James McQueen was born on 26 September 1867 in Dumfries, Scotland.  He died in 1868 in Dumfries, Scotland.

vi.    James McQueen was born on 30 December 1868 in Dumfries, Scotland.  Suspect mother died in childbirth with this child (and child also died?)

Wife No. 3, Sarah Paterson was born in England abt 1842. She died in 43 Wallace St. 15th Jan 1910, aged 68. James McQueen and Sarah Paterson had the following children;

v.         David McQueen born abt 1882 in the town of Dumfries.

The 1st 3 children plus Margaret born 1880, were recorded on the 1881 Census in Charlotte St. in Dumfries. The last was found in the 1891 Census entry. There were also two grandchildren in the house; John McQueen, 1 year old and Sarah McQueen, 9 month old.  John was the illegitimate child of Mary McQueen born 5th Feb 1858, daughter of first wife Jessie Richardson. Sarah Paterson McQueen was the illegitimate child of Grace McQueen born 5th June 1860, also a daur by his first wife.  Mary and grace were also in the house.

Report in the local newspaper in October 1883
"A FALSE ALARM - Much anxiety was caused about mid-day on Saturday by a report that a child had been drowned in the Nith. The missing youngster was three years of age, and was a grand-daughter of Mr James McQueen, joiner, Gordon Street. She had been playing with some children at the river wall below the Old Bridge, but had wandered away from her companions; and one of the little boys, a elative of the girl, went home with the alarming story that she had fallen nito the river. Sergeant Gibson & Constable Stewart of Dumfries, and Constable Waugh, Maxwelltown were soon at the spot with grappling irons and continued for a long time dragging the river between the Old Bridge and the Caul. The little one, however, was fortunately found in more comfortable circumstances on terra firma, and what had been a painful sensation soon resolved itself into good-natured smiles at (what now seemed) the ridiculous position of the policemen."

The above was kindly sent to me by fellow McQueen researcher, Alison Sutcliffe
