The Malcolmsons
Ian's father, John was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire to a single mum, Margaret Malcolmson, a comparatively rare thing in these days, the 1920s. He had 1 brother and 1 sister. John lived in George Street with his grandmother, his mum and siblings. John's sister, Annie, moved to Percy Main near Newcastle Upon Tyne when she married George Best. They had no children. Annie re-married after George died. Annie died in 1999. John's brother Jim, married his first wife, Tilly, in Johnstone and had three children, 2 daughters and a son. They settled first in Kendal, then Kidderminster. He became a widower at a fairly young age and re-married but it didn't last. He married for a third time and settled in Malawi where he died at the age of 57. John Malcolmson was a bright scholar, so much so that a teacher visited his mum to try and persuade her to keep him at school, but times were hard back in these days and John had to go out to work as soon as he was fourteen. Anyway they war was starting so it wasn't long before he had to join up. Being a bright chap he was in the REME. He served in various parts of the Middle East. He served his apprentice with Young's Buses however by 1949 he found himself employed by A & F Stoddard & Co. in Elderslie as a Loom Tuner. By this time he was also dating Ian's mum, Helen Moore Stirling who lived in Paisley. She was a Comptometer Operator. They married on the 31st July 1950 in St George's East Church in Paisley. Helen's parents were very regular church goers. They were only blessed with one child, Ian Malcolmson in 1952. John sadly died on 15th December, 2001 John's grandparents were George Crawford Malcolmson and Annie Morrison Watson. Unfortunately very little is known about the George Malcolmson's parents. It's believed that George and his parents, John and Sarah hailed from Ireland. So far they have not been traced although Sarah did die in Scotland in Glasgow in 1899 having re-married to an Archibald Armstrong. According to the 1901 Census George was born in England about 1871. In April 1901 George and Annie were living at 9 Collier St. in Johnstone. Margaret, their first child was born in 1901. They had another two children, Henrietta in 1902 and Robert in 1903. Ettie, as she was known, married James Easdon and settled in Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire . Robert married Jessie Nevitt and stayed in Johnstone till his death in 1965. George Malcolmson achieved dubious notoriety when his name appeared in the June 22nd edition of the 'Johnstone Advertiser'. I quote "George Malcolmson, labourer, Collier St. forfeited 7s 6d for being drunk and incapable". George died on the 10th March, 1911. Annie Morrison Watson was born in 1872 in Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland. She appeared on the census in 1881 in Abbey District, Paisley residing at 7 Collier Street in Johnstone. She also appeared on the census in 1891 in Johnstone & Elderslie district. She was a Flax Mill Hand about 15 July 1897 in Johnstone. She died on 22 April 1940 in Johnstone and was buried in Abbey Road Cemetery, Elderslie.

The
Stirlings (The Malcolmsons)
Ian's
mother was Helen Moore Stirling was born on 17 May 1926 in Cleveland,
Ohio, USA in the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital, City of Cleveland (from her
birth certificate). She came to
Scotland with her mother about 1929 for a holiday. It turned out to be a 'permanent'
holiday as they never returned to America. The Wall Street crash occurred
and resulted in the far reaching Depression which started in America in October
1929. Helen's father, my grandfather, decided it would be better to come
home to Scotland. Helen's
sister, Moira, remembers her mother saying that was less that pleased as he got
rid of all their good china etc. but managed to bring back Helen's Doll's pram
which was eventually passed on to Moira. Helen died on 22 October 1984 in hospital in Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland.
She was named after Great Grandmother Helen Millar Moore.
Frederick
Hope Pattison Stirling
was born in August 1894 in Bridgeton,
Glasgow. Evidence appears to show
that he was named after Frederick Hope Pattison,
an army veteran, who was a lieutenant in the 33rd (1st Yorkshire West Riding) Regiment of Foot -
'The Havercake Lads' - during the Waterloo campaign. His namesake fought at Quatre Bras and Waterloo.
In 1868/1869, more than 50 years after the battles the lieutenant
recorded his memories in a series of letters to his grandchildren.
These were published in 1870 in the form of a book.
There may be a closer connection because Fred's mother's family the
'Harts' originally hailed from Old Kilpatrick where the veteran lived during
the later part of his life (he lived at Mountblow, only a few hundred yards from
Old Kilpatrick Railway Station). Frederick
Stirling died on Dec 24th 1965. He was
married to Helen Moore (Nell) McQueen on 17 August 1925 in New York.

Helen
Moore (Nell) McQueen was born on 31 October 1894.
She died in December 1970 in Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland.
She was knocked down by a car while she was crossing the road.
Frederick Hope Pattison Stirling and Helen Moore (Nell) McQueen had the
following children: Ian's mother, Helen Moore Stirling and Moira Hart
Stirling (still living).
Ian's 'Stirling' Great-Grandparents
Robert Stirling and Martha Hart
Robert
Stirling was
born about 1858 in Cambuslang, Lanark, Scotland (his place of birth was taken
from the 1881 Census entry). It is
suspected that he was in fact adopted by the 'Parents'
recorded on the marriage certificate. His Marriage Certificate Showed him to be
26 in 1885. On Scot's Origins there
is a Bridgeton birth entry and a Kirkintilloch birth entry.
The IGI has Bridgeton entry but no Kirkintilloch entry.
IGI Bridgeton entry has wrong parents.
The Kirkintilloch connection may be correct because there is a LDS &
Scots Origins entry for the marriage of his parents in Kirkintillock in 1850
(also one for Cadder in Lanark). He
appeared on the census in 1881 in Barony and his recorded age was 22.
He resided at 6 Greenlodge Terrage as lodger in 1881 in Barony. He was the only lodger in a house with a family of 5 called
Findlayson. This is the same
address as on his Marriage Certificate. He
was a Confectionary Warehouseman in 1885 in Bridgeton. Robert married married two times; first time was to Martha Hart on 16 June 1885 in
Bridgeton.
Martha

at 45 Harvie St. in 1881 in Barony. She

She resided 696 Springfield Road before 1885 in Bridgeton, Glasgow.
Martha was the informant on her father's death certificate who died 8 days after
she was married. Martha
died about 1903 when her daughter Marion McGregor Stirling was about 14 years old (not proven).

William Stirling and Mary Abercromby had at least I child, Robert Stirling (Ian's great grandfather). However, his parents were over 50 years old so obviously not his 'blood' parents but a family connection is likely.
Walter
Hart was born
about 1822 in Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland.
Cannot find an IGI or Scots origin entry.
He lived at 72 Rose Street

3 times, first to Jessie Richardson in 1852, to Ann Henry in June

children by all 3 women. In addition there is strong evidence that James had
an illegitimate son to his 2nd wife before his first marriage.

Sarah Paterson McQueen was the illegitimate child of Grace McQueen born 5th June 1860, also a daur by his first wife. Mary and grace were also in the house.
Report in the local newspaper in
October 1883
"A FALSE ALARM - Much anxiety was caused about mid-day on Saturday by a report that a child had been drowned in the Nith. The missing youngster was three years of age, and was a grand-daughter of Mr James McQueen, joiner, Gordon Street. She had been playing with some children at the river wall below the Old Bridge, but had wandered away from her companions; and one of the little boys, a elative of the girl, went home with the alarming story that she had fallen nito the river. Sergeant Gibson & Constable Stewart of Dumfries, and Constable Waugh, Maxwelltown were soon at the spot with grappling irons and continued for a long time dragging the river between the Old Bridge and the Caul. The little one, however, was fortunately found in more comfortable circumstances on terra firma, and what had been a painful sensation soon resolved itself into good-natured smiles at (what now seemed) the ridiculous position of the
policemen."
The above was kindly sent to me by fellow McQueen researcher, Alison Sutcliffe
This must be referring to Sarah Paterson McQueen, illegitimate daughter of Grace McQueen mentioned above.
William

was a Shoemaker. He died before 1888 (when his daughter married). He resided in Wallace St. about 1888 in the town of Dumfries.
He first married Agnes Lambert in Milton in Urr, Kirkcudbrightshire in

died shortly afterwards because he was a widower when he married Isabella Miller on 31 May 1864 in the town of Dumfries. Isabella Miller was
born
on 3 December 1841 and christened on 25 December in the town of Dumfries. She was a domestic servant in 1864.

He died before 1861. He was
a Handloom Weaver before 1861. He
was married to Marion McGregor about August 1804 in Kilpatrick, Dunbarton,
Scotland. On both the IGI and Scots Origins there is an entry in both
Old and New Kilpatrick possibly signifying one came from Old and the other from
New. Marion McGregor was
born about 1775. This is an
assumption. She died before 1861.
Walter Hart and Marion McGregor had the following children:
i. Marion Hart was born on 12 June
1805 in New Kilpatrick, Dunbarton, Scotland.
ii. Walter Hart.
