There are estimated to be 130 women involved in street prostitution in Nottingham.

These women live in desperate situations - more than 90% are addicted to class A drugs and a similar number homeless. Almost half of those working on the streets have been raped.

Jericho Road, a joint church-led project, is making a difference in these women's lives - helping them to exit prostitution.

More than 50 volunteers and 3 staff are involved in the Jericho Road Project. Each week clients are helped through:

WEEKLY OUTREACHES
Three times a week volunteer teams take to the streets in the project's minibus, meeting the women in the red light district. They provide a listening ear along with a hot drink and food.

CLIENT VISITS
Clients are welcome to visit the Jericho Road Base four afternoons a week where they are provided with a meal and washing facilities and are able to access information, advocacy and referrals.

MENTORING
The Jericho Road Project is a partner in the Aspire Drug Mentoring Project, which provides support to people who are experiencing problematic drug use.

RESETTLEMENT
Project staff and volunteers work with clients whilst in prison, visiting them and assisting with resettlement following release.

The aims of the project are to:
- Empower clients... enabling them to make life changing, informed choices
- Assist and support those who wish to exit prostitution, enabling them to live a life away from the sex industry
- Be a voice for those marginalised by the sex industry by speaking out on related issues in an aim to influence public opinion and government policy

In the last 12 months over 150 women have been helped by the project; of which all were seen during outreach, 71 visited the project's base and 12 were visited in prison. During outreaches 833 individual meetings with clients occurred and 447 visits to the project's base took place.

Working closely with other agencies, such as the police, Prostitute Outreach Workers (POW) and the City Council, the Jericho Road Project is making a real and lasting difference to some of Nottingham's most marginalised people.

The Jericho Road Project is church-led. Volunteers from 14 churches are currently involved in the Jericho Road Project. It is managed by prospective trustees from St Andrew's Church, the Christian Centre and the Notts Prayer Network. It also received financial support from Nottinghamshire YMCA and Nottingham Youth For Christ. It aims to become an independent charity during 2009.

"The spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me, because the Lord has appointed me to bring the good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the broken hearted and to announce that captives will be released and prisoners freed" (Isaiah 61:1)
