Participating teams
46: 24 from the Second and 22 from the Third Division. 23 teams in
each area group.
North: Blackpool, Bolton, Bradford, Burnley, Bury, Carlisle,
Chester, Chesterfield, Darlington, Doncaster, Halifax, Hartlepool,
Huddersfield, Hull, Lincoln, Preston, Rochdale, Rotherham, Scarborough,
Scunthorpe, Stockport, Wigan, York.
South: Barnet, Bournemouth, Brighton, Cardiff, Colchester, Crewe,
Exeter, Fulham, Gillingham, Hereford, Leyton Orient, Mansfield,
Northampton, Plymouth, Port Vale, Reading, Shrewsbury, Stoke, Swansea,
Torquay, Walsall, WBA, Wrexham.
Format
First round: 7 groups of 3 in each area, with 2 teams
receiving a bye into the second round. Winners and runners-up advance to
the second round.
Second round: 8 single-game ties in each area. Winners advance to
the area quarter-finals.
Area quarter-finals: 4 single-game ties in each area. Winners
advance to the area semi-finals.
Area semi-finals: 2 single-game ties in each area. Winners
advance to the area finals.
Area finals: 1 two-legged tie in each area. Winners advance to
the national final.
Final: a single game, played at Wembley.
First round
