Freight Rover Trophy - 1984/85
Participating teams
48: 24 each from the Third and Fourth Divisions. 24 teams in each
area group.
North: Blackpool, Bolton, Bradford, Burnley, Bury, Chester,
Chesterfield, Crewe, Darlington, Doncaster, Halifax, Hartlepool, Hull,
Lincoln, Mansfield, Preston, Rochdale, Rotherham, Scunthorpe, Stockport,
Tranmere, Wigan, Wrexham, York.
South: Aldershot, Bournemouth, Brentford, Bristol City, Bristol
Rovers, Cambridge, Colchester, Derby, Exeter, Gillingham, Hereford,
Millwall, Newport, Northampton, Orient, Peterborough, Plymouth, Port
Vale, Reading, Southend, Swansea, Swindon, Torquay, Walsall.
Format
First round: 12 two-legged ties in each area. Winners advance
to the second round.
Second round: 6 single-game ties in each area. Winners and two
best losers advance to the area quarter-finals. (Losers ranked by total
goals scored, then total goals conceded, in the first two rounds.)
Area quarter-finals: 4 single-game ties in each area. Winners
advance to the area semi-finals.
Area semi-finals: 2 single-game ties in each area. Winners
advance to the area finals.
Area finals: 1 single-game tie in each area. Winners advance to
the national final.
Final: a single game, played at Wembley.
