About Sea Scouts

Sea Scouts are young people, male and female, aged between ten and 15 (although Scout normally move on to Explorers at 14). Each Troop consists of small units (Patrols) of four to six members, one of whom is the Patrol Leader who shares responsibility with the adult Leader for maintaining standards and training the Patrol. The progressive training programme for Scouts takes the young person through the main awards, Scout Award, Pathfinder Award, the Explorer Award and the Chief Scout's Award. Sea Scouts Groups are very similar to any other Scout Group, they have the same aim, but use a special emphasis on water activities and maritime training within their programme to achieve that aim. Water activities provide the adventure and excitement that youngsters are looking for and are an area where skills and age do not necessarily correlate providing an ideal opportunity for Scouts to teach each other..

Water Activities

Water activities take place each Friday evening throughout the summer at South Staffs Sailing Club, Gailey, Junction 12 of the M6. Members are encouraged to prepare and rig their boat, developing the essential teamwork skills required for successful sailing. The sailing Club is recognised by the Royal Yachting Association and supports the groups qualified Dinghy Instructors. In addition we also provide instruction in canoeing and kayaking through our qualified British Canoe Union Coach.
