Percy Blanford Kayak

The PBK (Percy Blandford Kayak), is a large cockpit, canvas covered boat which is both stable and easy to steer in a straight line. Designed for the Scout movement by Percy Blandford, the PBK used Plywood frames (bulkheads and laths) covered with canvas and waterproofed with waterproof glue. This was the most common approach to canoe building in the 1930's to 50's. The design was very popular PBK being built in large number into the 1960's. Many of these were made at home by enthusiasts due to the PBK's simple construction. As with many things technology has moved on and both materials and shape have changed from the days of the PBK which is now a rare site on British Waterways.
