Ninth News - September 2001ContentsBeaver News Beaver NewsGoing StrongThe Beaver Colony continues to thrive with around eleven members at present. Several older Beavers have recently joined the Cubs and so a few new faces would be very welcome.
Cub NewsRecruits NeededThe cub section seems to be going through a rough patch at present, the number of Cubs and Leaders being very low. We hope that this will be a temporary state of affairs and that before long we shall once again have a strong Cub Scout Section

Summer Camp 2001Sea Scout TroopAt one time it looked as though our Camp might fall victim to the Foot-and-Mouth epidemic. In the event all was well and we were able to go to our favourite site on the shore of Windermere. With 15 Scouts and 7 Leaders the camp was well attended and Despite some indifferent weather, successful.
The programme included sailing and canoeing (with capsize drill) a couple of Wide Games, a half-day walk in Grizedale, a wood-fire cooking day, (when of course it rained all day), and training for the BCU One and Two Star Awards. Elsewhere you will see a note referring to Donald Bean and the "Bean Trophy". This was competed for for the very first time at camp and awarded to Riga Patrol, winners of the Canoe Relay Race. It will be awarded each year to an Individual or to a patrol for a canoeing activity. The only complaint heard from a Scout about the Camp was "Why couldn't we have come for a fortnight". VERY MANY THANKS
To Sandy's Ltd for the loan of their Land Rover and enormous trailer. To J.Peatfield Garage for the loan of their 2 vans and general help with transport et al. To those parents who provided driving duty To all the Leaders of course.
Without all this unstinting help such a camp would not be possible
Leader TrainingPower Boat CertificatesWe were recently offered two places on a Powerboat drivers course by South Staffs Sailing Club. 2 Instructors attended and both gained their Royal Yachting Association Certificates
Donald BeanLifelong CanoeistThe Leaders in the Group will remember Donald Bean, who over many years devoted much time to training our Sea Scouts in canoeing, Donald's lifelong interest and one which he continued to pursue until very recently. Sadly Donald died in April at the age 81 and we have earned that in his will he has left a sum of money to be used for the furtherance of canoeing in our Group Those of us who knew Donald will remember him with affection and we will do our best to ensure that his bequest truly benefits our future canoeing and canoeists. To start with the Group Executive Committee has agreed that we institute a 'Bean Trophy' for canoeing in the Group. All the details have yet to be decided.
World Jamboree - Thailand9th RepresentativeCongratulations go to one of our Patrol Leaders who will be attending the 20th World Scout Jamboree in Thailand as part of the Staffordshire contingent and as a representative of Stafford District and our group. More on this later.
All ChangeNew Uniforms in 2003As part of a major reorganisation throughout Scouting redesigned uniforms are proposed and will be available from January 2003. The existing uniforms can be retained if they are still serviceable. There will be no major change to the Sea Scout Uniform. Full details of this, and of other changes including badges and awards, are still being finalised and will be announced by the leaders in due course.
Lord Stafford CupDistrict CompetitionThis annual competition is based on a week-end camp and this year, in addition to camping standards, included various competitive activities and skills including building bivouacs, forming the tallest human pyramid, 3 legged race, tug of war, Treasure Hunt and whittling a woggle. The 9th entered two patrols. The menus for the cooking test sound enterprising and included Soup, Shepherds Pie, Chicken Surprise, and Stewed Apple with real custard. Just shows what influence a girl or two can have on the usual Scout menu of bangers and spuds. No neither patrol won, but they did have a great weekend. Thanks to J.Peatfield Garage again for providing transport.
Scout ActivityA Difficult SummerThe Foot-and-Mouth epidemic has caused many alterations to the programme but even so a lot has been achieved. The County Regatta was postponed to September The troops annual map reading exercise on Cannock Chase had to be cancelled - but was converted into a well-worthwhile activity day at Group HQ Monday evening sailing suffered a late start, but eventually got into full swing and was well attended All the Sea Scouts took part in a District 'Introduction to Caving' evening Six Scouts attended a District Course and gained the Climber Badge (Stage 2).
