Ninth News - September 2001ContentsBeaversCubs Troop Activities First Aid Course Group - 100 Club Fund-raising Summer Camp 2002 Diary Dates Badge Courses St. George's Day Photographs On CD Water Activities A Quieter Life? Maintenance Work Beaver NewsGood NewsWelcome to our new leader who has joined our Beaver Colony leadership team. There are now 3 adults working with the Colony - good news indeed. With 12 Beavers in the section at present and we can now look for one or two new recruits.
Cub NewsShortage Of LeadersThe Royal Navy Inspecting Officer did comment on the low number of Cubs in the Group ( 6 at present) and strongly recommended that we address the issue and develop a strategy to increase membership. This is a serious matter to which the Leaders and the Group Executive Committee must give urgent attention . There is a shortage of adult leaders in the Cub Section - are there no parents willing to help? Contact us at: Scouts@bholland90.fsnet.co.uk (Just click on the email address). Troop ActivitiesA Full ProgrammeThere are now 20 regular attendees at Troop Meetings. This leaves a little room to spare as we would like to see a minimum Troop membership of 24. This too was the subject of comment by the RN Inspecting Officer. Nonetheless the 20 do have a pretty full programme. Royal Navy InspectionOn the 4th of October the Troop underwent it's 2001 RN Inspection which was carried out by the Staff Officer Sea Scouts, who travelled to Stafford from HM Naval Base in Portsmouth. The Lieutenant Commander has since reported that he was well satisfied with the Troop's standards of appearance, dress, knowledge, drill and bearing. He thought that the ceremony of Colours was conducted to a high standard and found the Scouts to be "very well presented, smart and confident in responding to questions". He was very impressed by our Headquarters building. Autumn CampTen Scouts with three Leaders enjoyed a traditional week end camp at Sherratt's Wood in October when, despite indifferent weather, a lot was learned about the age-old basic skills of camping and outdoor cooking. ClimbingSome of our Sea Scouts have of late taken a keen interest in climbing. Four Scouts are training for the Mountaineer Badge while six have all gained their Stage 1 Climbing Badge. Troop members have also tried their hand on the Scout Climbing Wall at Walton, following which several entered for the Scout National Championships held at the NIA in Birmingham. They did very well and returned with 2 first places in age groups and one 2nd place. We shall know who to send shinning up the flag mast when the halyards get jammed! District Gang ShowThe 9th was represented by two Scouts in the recent District Gang Show. Well done to those involved.
First Aid CourseFor Leaders And HelpersAll Leaders and Helpers should have a current First Aid Certificate. These are valid for 3 years and it is 3 years since we last ran a course. The course will be held on April the 12th and 14th.
Group 100-ClubIt is our policy not to publish names on the website but you can see the winners list on the hard copy of the newsletter. If you would like to join the 100 Club please email us at Scouts@bholland90.fsnet.co.uk and we will send you the application form
FundraisingOur stalwart fundraisers have despite many pleas, been unable to recruit helpers in this work and have regretfully stepped down. They have raised a considerable sum of money for the group funds and we offer them our grateful thanks,. Their final effort, the Christmas Fayre, was very successful and raised over £170 for the group funds. We now urgently seek others amongst parents willing to continue the good work. Anyone who feels that they could help should contact Contact us at: Scouts@bholland90.fsnet.co.uk (Just click on the email address).

A Quieter Life? You will have noticed that although our HQ Building is quite splendid, the acoustics leave something to be desired. When a noisy game is in progress you just can't hear yourself think. Then everyone shouts louder which simply makes things worse. Don't despair, we have plans to install some sound absorption which should improve things.
Maintenance WorkA great deal of work goes on "behind the scenes" at the 9th HQ. You will have seen boats and trailers being cleaned, repaired and painted. From time to time you will have noticed that the grass has been cut, rubbish bins emptied and boundary hedges trimmed. It doesn't happen by magic! Thanks to all those who assist. |
