Bond Bug Towing Bracket
I have made 3 of these now, and this is what I done, it may not be the best way but it’s my way?
Please note I am not telling you what to do, I’m just telling you how I done it.
So don’t blame me if it goes wrong?
So what did I do?
First get the parts.
1) Towing ball hitch
2) 2 bolts for the ball hitch
3) 1 light socket bracket
4) 1 light socket
5) 2 m of 7 core cable
6) New flasher unit to take extra lights
7) 1m angle iron 40mm x40mm x 3mm
8) 1 sheet of 2mm steel 40cm x 30cm
9) Flat bar 30mm x 300m x 3mm
10) Flat bar 1m x 500mm x 3mm
11) 1m angle iron 20mm x 20mm x 2mm
12) 1 exhaust pipe clamp
13) 4 bolts to bolt bar to boot floor
What to do.
First I made the main bracket, this is made from 2mm sheet steel and I cut it
with a jig saw, I cut the centre plate 125mm x 280mm then bent it to shape,
300mm from the top and 100mm from the bottom.
Next I cut out the two side pieces I cut 2 125mm x 245mm plates then marked out
and used a Jig saw to cut out the
shape.
Next I welded the 2 sides on to the middle plate.
Then I drilled to two holes for the ball pin and two holes in the top to blot
it on to the bug both of these have small plates with holes in to match.
Now that the unit is made the next job is to fit it to the Bug.
This is done by fitting a angle iron bar to the top of the shockers.
Take a measurement from shocker to shocker then cut the angle iron just a bit
wider then drill a hole in each end, and mark and drill two holes for the
bracket making sure it in the centre of the Bug.
Remove the top shockers nuts and fit the angle iron over then refit the nuts but
do not fully tighten them yet.
Now drill four holes up through the angle iron and in to the boot then fit the
flat bar in the boot and tighten the four bolts up then tighten the shockers
nuts up.
Now you can fit the bracket.
To stop the bracket flexing you must fit a brace from the bracket the the gear
box rear mounting chassis tube, keep the bracket end as low as possible and
making sure the brace dose not fowl the axle.
Next fit the tow ball and the small plate also the bracket for the light socket and drill a hole in the boot for the wiring and connect it ii to the loom.
And that is how I fitted my tow bar??
