Hi there, this is Sam Squirrel again.
Some months ago we had a new visitor on the bird feeder.
No, it wasn't our friend Scatty or any of the other squirrels.
The human Family knew that there were Woodpeckers about because you can hear them tapping at the big trees.
Though why they don't get a BIG headache I don't know !
Mother human looked out and saw a very smart bird on the peanuts. He had a bright red cap and a long beak.
Mother managed to get this picture of it but it was very shy so it's not clear.
It kept going round to the back of the bird feeder when she was trying to get a picture.
Father came to see too and then they looked at their bird book to identify it.
The Family decided it was the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker because of its size and smart red cap.
The woodpecker came for more peanuts quite often after that but would quickly fly off if there was any movement.
The Family were pleased to have such unusual birds in the garden but there was another surprise to come this month!
Father noticed a big bird going along the edge of the grass by the house and took this picture.
The bird was busy going along the gap between the paving stones and the grass.
When Mother came home she was sorry to have missed all the excitement.
They went to their bird book again and identified it as the Green Woodpecker this time.
Apparently they like wood ants and it had come down after the big nest at the edge of the grass.
