Sam Squirrel's Story Page 21

Snapper Hello, this is Snapper the swan.

I don't see much of the human Family but this day I was so cross with them I thought you should hear about it.

When I had calmed down, I realised that they didn't mean any harm but I was very annoyed at the time.

Still, as Sam says, 'get to the story!'

Canoe and Swan One of the human Sons had made a canoe and wanted to try it out on the water.

He had done a good job and it was neat and watertight.  Here is a picture of it for you.

The problem was that I had a nest nearby and wasn't happy about a possible threat to the babies.

Swan You can see that I am keeping an eye on the canoe and fluffing up my feathers to warn him not to come close.

It was a waste of time as he got into the canoe and went paddling along, getting closer and closer to my nest.

I was getting more and more worried, and consequently, getting more and more cross.

Swan taking off In the end I decided to attack him and stop him going any further.

I hissed and hissed and worked up speed and chased after him.

I went up onto the back of the canoe and hit him on the head with my beak.

It worked  !

He quickly paddled to the bank and got out. The Family packed everything up and went off to the doctor's as the Son was bleeding.

Not badly so it was OK and my babies were safe. What a relief !

See you again
