Sam Squirrel's Story Page 17
Hello, this is Sam Squirrel speaking.
Well, you wouldn't believe all the fuss and noise this week.
The human Family were watching the activity in the big trees behind the garden.
The pictures show you just how big they are.
They are just right for birds to nest in and for squirrels to make their homes.
Which is why there was such a battle going on.
Scatty had lived there for some time and found it very convenient.
There were a pair of pigeons too but there was still plenty of room.
The problem was the magpies.
A new pair arrived and decided they liked the setup.
Unfortunately they weren't willing to share the territory with the squirrels and pigeons.
So they tried to chase them off.
The human Family watched, amazed, for a couple of hours as the wild creatures went really wild.
They chased each other up and down the branches, leaped across gaps between the
trees, chattered and shrieked at each other.
Back and forth they went, the squirrels even jumping across from one tree to the next.
The magpies were better at flying from branch to branch and they had very sharp beaks.
The squirrels knew the trees better and could nip in and out of the branches.
Luckily most of it was just intimidation and there was very little actual harm done.
I think that they were all exhausted at the end.
The magpies had to concede to the squirrels and the pigeons just went off and came back again later.
The magpies built their nest near the top of the right hand tree and pretended that the others weren't there.
This all happened in the Spring time and I think that they were all looking for good nest sites, don't you?
See you again
