A SELECTION OF
OUR PROGRAMMES
Canzona
aims to explore little-known and unjustly neglected repertoire as well as to
perform better-known works with an informed and fresh approach, and our
balanced and interesting programmes have been enthusiastically received by a
wide audience.
This
is just a selection of the chamber music programmes that Canzona can
offer. Our special interest is in
combining early strings and brass, and in performing solo or small-scale vocal
repertoire with chamber ensemble, with an emphasis on the 17th century. If you have any special ideas or a theme for
the coming season and feel that our interests would suit your own ideas, please
do not hesitate to contact us and we will be very happy to discuss
possibilities. We also love to work with
choirs, so if you are looking for either a chamber group (strings and/or brass)
or an orchestra for performances of baroque choral works do please get in
touch.
A
programme of 17th century trio sonatas, showing the influence of the
Italians throughout Europe, with music by Cavalli, Legrenzi, Corelli, Purcell,
Blow, Rosenmüller and Couperin.
2
violins, bass violin/gamba, harpsichord/organ
2.
TRE VIOLINI
If
there is one thing better than the sound of two violins playing together, it is
the sound of three! This sumptuous sound was exploited by some of the most
important composers of instrumental music in 17th century Italy,
such as Gabrieli, Fontana and Marini. This programme explores the works in this
genre by these composers and their contemporaries, together with pieces by
German and English composers of the next generations, Pachelbel, Schmeltzer,
Fux, Finger and Purcell, who were all influenced by the Italians to compose for
this glorious combination.
3
violins, bass violin, harpsichord/organ
Trumpet, 2 violins, viola, bass violin, harpsichord
4.
With PETER HARVEY (baritone) - FRENCH BAROQUE MUSIC
Contrasting
sacred motets by Campra and Brossard with a secular cantata such as
Clérambault’s “Pigmalion”. Two violins join the voice in the Campra
motets and the Clérambault, and provide instrumental interludes in trio
sonatas/suites from “Les Nations” by
Couperin, whilst the viola da gamba shines in Marais’ “Le Labyrinthe”.
Baritone, 2 violins, viola da gamba,
organ/harpsichord.
5.
With PHILIPPA HYDE (soprano) – AYRES FOR THE THEATRE

and their contemporaries, including songs and instrumental music for
productions of The Tempest in 1674
and 1712, and extended excerpts from Purcell’s “The Fairy Queen”.
