Since its formation in 1992, Canzona has established
itself as one of England’s leading ensembles specialising in the performance of
baroque music on period instruments. The core of the group comprises two
violins and continuo, but Canzona is regularly enlarged to orchestral
proportions, particularly for its collaborations with various choirs.
The ensemble has performed with many eminent
colleagues such as the conductors Stephen Layton, Harry Christophers and Brian
Kay, and singers Emma Kirkby, James Bowman, Ian Bostridge and Peter Harvey. It
has given performances in the Spitalfields and Three Choirs Festivals and
appeared at St. John’s, Smith Square and The Royal Festival Hall to mention
just a few; and was Ensemble in Residence at Magdalen College, Oxford in 2003
and 2004.
Canzona’s
recording of Campra motets has met with much critical acclaim.
