Octavian Singers Concert
Saturday April 8th 2000, 7.30pm
A Celebration of French Music
Including Gounod's St.Cecilia Mass and works by Poulenc and Faure
At All Saint's Church, Woodham, nr. Woking
For those of us who love the exquisite detail and lyricism of French music, the forthcoming concert of The Octavian Singers will be a real treat. The Woking based Chamber choir will return to one of their favourite venues, All Saints Church in Woodham, to present the best of French choral music.
The main work being featured is Gounod’ s Messe Solennell (St Cecilia Mass). The work was first performed in 1851 and brought Gounod into public acclaim. The soloists, Soprano Giselle Thorne, tenor James Cadwell and bass Paul Robins, are all regular members of the choir and have numerous solo appearances under their belts!
This choir is noted for its wonderful tone and
therefore one of the gems of this concert will surely be Panis Angelicus by
Frank. This work has Frank’s
indelible stamp on it. The piece has a beautiful melody and harmony which
perfectly demonstrates Frank’s romantic and mystic style.
Works by Durufle, Faure and Poulenc will also
be performed. Poulenc’s Salve
Regina, in particular, will provide a total contrast due to its complex and
unexpected harmonies. By choosing
this highly challenging unaccompanied work, Laura Brown, the choir’s Musical
Director, will be able to show the great diversity and high standard of the
choir. The concert is certainly one
not to be missed!
Tickets are priced at £6.50 and will be available on the door -
