The first records of the
Black Dog's licensees are in the 1750's when Richard Ludlam
was brewer and licensee at the pub. In 1756 his widow Hannah
took over and in 1760 Frances Homes (possibly the son-in-law
of Richard Ludlam).
In 1773 William Murton was to live at the Black Dog, he appears
to be the last occupier of the thatched building, although now
described as a private dwelling, it was demolished and replaced
by a new building circa 1787. This is the building that stands
today.
John Cockram who owned a maltings at the bottom of the village
in Oadby, became licensee of the new Black Dog. In 1798 Cath
Cockram was licensee and 1800 Joseph Cockram, John's brother
took over until 1816 when John Smalley became brewer and licensee
of the Dog c1835.
William Watts a brewer in Leicester bought the pub with Peter
Howard as licensee of the Black Dog. In 1862 the licence was
transferred from Peter Howard to Otho Juba who, as a descendant
of slavery, presented a strange character to the people of Oadby.
Otho, often in trouble with the law was prosecuted many times
for selling beer out of hours, keeping unlawful hours, poaching
and defiant measures of liquor. Otho Juba was given notice to
quit the Black Dog in 1875....
