old friends - but where are they now?

Ton Pentre 1913-14
The tussles between 'Ton' and Barry Town
are almost legendary - my first Barry Town match was against Ton Pentre in which Barry
Town won 7-1, which included 4 penalties awarded by celebrity and ex-World Cup ref Clive Thomas!
The early years saw Ton playing between the Southern League and the Welsh League (winning the
Welsh League for the first time in 1914-15), until 1922-23 when Ton went the same way as
Abertillery - out of business.
Unlike Abertillery, Ton returned after the Second World War and played their football entirely
within Wales, winning the Welsh League several times. Ton Pentre have remained a strong Welsh
League side ever since but, after
resignation from the national League of Wales in 1996-97, stubbornly refuse to re-enter the League of Wales / Welsh Premier despite winning the Welsh League (the south Wales feeder league to the WPL) 5 times in a row between
1997-98 and 2001-02. Ton's FA Cup record peaked in 1986-87 when they reached the First Round Proper for the first and only time in its history - ironically against Cardiff City. The Welsh Cup record is better with a Welsh Cup Final appearance against Cardiff City in 1921-22 at Pontypridd, the Bluebirds winning 2-0. It was with great pride that
Ton Pentre represented Wales in the Inter toto Cup as recently as 1995-96, but failed to progress passed the group stage.
TON PENTRE's high point: Welsh League (south only) Champions 8 times. Welsh Inter Toto representatives 1995-96. Welsh Cup Finalists 1921-22.
