Stoke first met Barry in the 1913-14 season after being relegated from a short-lived stint in the SL Division One. Stoke had actually been founder members of the Football League in 1888-89 but were not re-elected the following season. In 1919-20 they were elected back into the Football League Division Two and gained promotion to Division One a season later. In 1925 Stoke changed their name to Stoke City. Since then Stoke City have, like many others, spent their time being promoted and relegated between the League Divisions, reaching the 'new' Division One as recently as 2002-03. They have a proud FA Cup history and were FA Cup Semi-Finalists as far back as 1898-99 and as recently as 1971-72. Stoke City lifted the League Cup in 1971-72, beating Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley. Stoke City have also played in Europe, losing out to Kaiserslautern 5-3 on aggregate in the UEFA Cup after winning their home leg 3-1! In 1973-74 Stoke were up against the mighty Ajax and were unlucky to go out on away goals after the games ended 1-1 in Stoke and 0-0 away. The 1913-14 Southern League tie at Jenner Park between Barry and Stoke ended with a victory for The Linnets again in front of a crowd of over 5,000.

STOKE's high point: FA Cup Semi-Finalists. 1st Round UEFA Cup appearances in early 1970s. League Cup Winners 1971-72.

Swansea Town (City)1913-14

What can I say that hasn't been said already?! I'm sure you all know how Swansea have progressed since those innocent days of being genuine peers of Barry Town in 1913-14 - both teams joined the Southern League Division 2 at the same time. Who has had the greater glory? YOU decide! That first season saw Barry and Swansea Town meeting 3 times; twice in the League of course, and once in the South Wales & Mon Cup Semi Final (which Barry won 1-0). Barry lost to Swansea in Swansea in their first ever League match, but pulled off a great 2-1 win in front of over 5,000 fans in Barry. After the Great War, Swansea Town were succesful in their application to be placed in the newly enlarged SL Division One and were also founder members of the new Division Three South in the football league in 1920-21. They knocked around here and then Divison Three and Four for decades. In 1969-70, Swansea Town became Swansea City in mid-season. The name change apparently did the club no harm as glory days were around the corner. Swansea City finally got out of Division Four in 1977-78 and embarked on their famous roller-coaster ride up to the top of the English pyramid - and right back down again. Promoted to Division three in 1977-78, Division Two in 1978-79, and Division One in 1980-81, briefly reaching the pinnacle of English League football by topping Division One for a time. Relegation back to Division Two came in 1982-83, Division Three in 1983-84, and Division Four in 1986-87. Swansea City have never really recovered and have been in the lower depths of the Football League ever since. Survived apparent certain relegation to the Football Conference in 2001-02. Half decent FA Cup record, having reached the FA Semi Finals in 1925-26 (losing to Bolton) and in 1963-64 (losing to Preston North End). Swansea Town/City have won the Welsh Cup 10 times, the first being in 1912-13, and the last (ever?) in 1990-91 against Wrexham - narrowly beating Barry Town in the Semi's 3-2 on aggregate. The recent innovation of the FAW Premier Cup has brought the teams together again, with Barry Town having a proud winning record over their old rivals - twice topping the Group that also contained the Swans. Like Barry Town, Swansea have tasted European football via the Welsh system (though confined to the Welsh Cup in Swansea's case). Not a great record to be honest, with their last European venture being in the old Cup Winners Cup in 1991-92 where they lost 10-1 on aggregate to AS Monaco - losing 8-0 in Monaco and 2-1 at The Vetch, dispelling the myth that the Welsh English League sides would automatically do better than the wholly Welsh-based teams of today.

SWANSEA's high point: FA Cup Semi-Finalists 1925-26 and 1963-64. Topped the old English Division One briefly. Multiple Welsh Cup wins.
