old friends - but where are they now?

Newport County (AFC) 1913-14

Newport County joined the Southern League Division Two in 1912-13 where they finished 10th from 13. Finished above Barry in the 1913-14 season, but below Barry in 1914-15. Following the War they were elected into the enlarged SL Division One - a choice that the Barry board declined to take up. In 1920-21 Newport County became founder members of Division Three South and spent the following 60 years in the lower reaches of the English League. A low point being relegation to the Conference in 1988, but it was to get worse for the team from Gwent. The club imploded the following season and were expelled from the Conference. Newport County's best FA Cup performance came in 1948-49 when they reached the 5th Round - put out 3-2 by Portsmouth. Unbelieavbly, it took until 1979-80 for Newport County to lift the Welsh Cup in which was, equally unbelievably, their first appearance in the Final. Their second and last time they reached the Final was in 1986-87 where they lost 1-0 to Merthyr. Great success came in the Cup Winners Cup for the 1980-81 season (via the previous season's Welsh Cup win) when after disposing of Crusaders of Northern Ireland and Haugar of Norway in the 1st and 2nd Rounds respectively, Newport were finally knocked out at the Quarter Final stage by Carl Zeiss Jena of East Germany 2-3 on aggregate. Out of the ashes of the folded club sprang Newport AFC in 1989. They joined the Hellenic League for the 1989-90 season and were soon Champions, promoted to the Southern League Midland Division (Beazer Homes League) in 1990-91 - reuniting themselves with local rivals Barry Town in the process. Have been floating around the Midland Divisions ever since. In 1999, Newport AFC changed their name to Newport County. The recent innovation of the FAW Premier Cup have helped the two clubs cross paths once more and have a rich recent history in player and manager movements between the two clubs.

NEWPORT's high point: Welsh Cup Winners once, 1979-80. European Cup Winners Cup Quarter-Finalists 1980-81.
