FORZ Y BARRI!

old friends - but where are they now?

Mardy 1913-14

Another very brief unspectacular history that followed a similar course to that of Abertillery's. Joined the Southern League Division Two in 1911-12, the Great War intervened, and failed to complete the 1922-23 season.

Margate 1936-37

Merthyr Town (Tydfil) 1918-19

Merthyr Town Reserves 1927-28

Mid Rhondda (United) 1913-14

Joined the Southern League Division Two in 1912-13 and were actually the very first team the new Barry played against in their long history of Southern League football. Fortunately for Barry that first match was to be at home in Jenner Park in front of 4,000 fans - including around 1,000 away fans. Barry won that first ever match 2-1 with goals from Ralph Isherwood, the first goal coming only 3 minutes into Barry's footballing existence. Mid Rhondda were the team that ended Barry's first FA Cup run. However, in the 1920-21 season the two teams met again in the FA Cup, this time in the 3rd Qualifying Round. A crowd of over 10,000 at Taff Vale Park witnessed a 0-0 draw, and the replay at Jenner Park saw 8,500 fans cram into Jenner Park where Billy Price scored the single goal that put Barry through to the next round. Hard to believe that a team name long since forgotten was host to almost 19,000 fans over two Cup ties! Mid Rhondda were founder members of the new Welsh League in 1919-20 and were that season's Champions. They then left the Southern League in favour of the Western League where they added 'United' to their name. Rejoined the Southern League in the form of the Western Section having 2 decent seasons and 2 poor seasons, finishing bottom two years running in 1926-27 and 1927-28 after which the club presumably folded.
