old friends - but where are they now?
Leicester United 1990-91
Llanelly/i 1913-14
Joined the Southern League Division Two in 1911-12 where they spent the next 50-odd years swapping between
the Southern League or the various Welsh Leagues before finally settling on life in Wales in the 70s. This all sounds pretty stable, but it wasn't. By 1925 the club
had run up a few debts and players were not getting paid. The club were banned from competing by the FAW and ultimately withdrew from the Southern League. The club ticked over
without kicking a truly competitive ball for a full three seasons before finally resurfacing for the 1929-30 Southern League Western Section season and, as many Welsh teams, in the Welsh League. Despite 3 years in the
wilderness, Llanelly bounced back to become Champions of the Welsh League in 1929-30. At some point during the 60s the club changed its name to the one we recognise today; Llanelli. The 1970s brought great success
to Stebonheath where they won the Welsh League numerous times. The League of Wales in the 90s saw more success coming to Llanelli where they finished in the top 5 for four seasons between 1996-97 and 1999-2000, before finally slumping and
succumbing to relegation in 2002-03 from the renamed Welsh Premier League. The 1950s were definitely the best period for FA Cup success when LLanelly reached the 1st Round Proper in 1950-51 finally losing to Bristol Rovers in a 2nd replay 1-3 at Ninian Park. Their defeated 3rd qualifying round opponents
were Barry Town, and in 1952-53 it was again Barry Town who lost in the 3rd qualifying round when Llanelly had their greatest FA Cup moment; stuffing Grays Athletic 5-0 away to set up a 2nd Round proper tie against Colchester United, going down 2-3.
The Welsh Cup has only recently become a decent hunting ground for Llanelli, reaching the Quarter Finals in 1999-00 and 2000-01. Stebonheath was awarded the honour of staging the Welsh Cup Final in 2002-03 for the first time, where Barry Town beat Cwmbran Town on penalties to clinch a dramatic and historic Treble Double of
back to back Championship and Welsh Cup wins. For a greater in-depth look at Llanelli's history visit the excellent site www.llanelliafc.co.uk/archives.htm

LUTON TOWN
Luton were a founder member of the Southern
League in 1894. Were elected to the Football League in 1898 but came back to the Southern
League for 1900-01. Met Barry Town after being relegated from Southern League Division One,
but only finished on equal points with Champions Croydon Common but finished runners-up by the games lost rule. Were a founder member of
the Division Three South in the football league in 1920-21 and were Champions of that league
for the 1936-37 season. Gained promotion to Division One in 1954-55 and have gone up and down
the leagues ever since. FA Cup history includes reaching their first FA Cup Final in 1958-59
where they lost to Notts Forest at Wembley. Have been FA Cup Semi-Finalists several times,
the last being in 1993-94 where they lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Wembley. Won the League Cup
against Arsenal in 1987-88. The 1913-14 tie between Luton and Barry was designated as the
'annual outing' jolly for the Barry away support. Barry lost!
