old friends - but where are they now?
Aberaman Athletic 1918-19
Aberdare (Athletic) (& Aberaman ) 1913-14
Aberdare's history is a nightmare to unfold! Aberdare, it seems,
joined the Southern League Division Two in 1910-11 where they stayed until 1914 when they folded.
The team then re-appears in 1920-21 as part of the Welsh League, which they win. However, it appears
that Aberdare were expected to re-join the Southern League after the War as Barry were
due to meet The Darians on the opening day of the season, but the lateness of their withdrawal
left Barry without a game. Aberdare Athletic THEN join the Southern League for the 1920-21 season where they finished Runners-up to Champions Barry Town by 3 points. This was sweet revenge by Barry as Aberdare Athletic
had broken Linnets hearts in an FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round tie in front of a crowd of over 12,000, winning 2-0.
Abertillery (Town) 1913-14
Joined the Southern League Division Two in this season and had a singularly unspectacular history. Abertillery left the Southern League the following season, and after football
resumed in 1919-20 after the War, rejoined Division Two. Unable to complete fixtures in 1922-23 and folded.

Alvechurch (Villa) 1978-79
Joined Barry in the Southern League Division One North in 1978-79 after several very successful years in the Worcestershire Combination, Midland Combination, and West Midlands Regional Combination. Became Southern League Midland Division Champions in 1980-81 and overrall Southern League Champions after beating Southern Division Champions Dartford on penalties. There then followed an apparent steady decline until the mid-90s saw the club fold while back in the West Midlands Regional League. It re-surfaced again in 1996 as Alvechurch Villa and is currently in the Midland Alliance. Alvechurch have an decent FA Cup record, reaching the 1st Round Proper in 1971-72, and the 3rd Round in 1973-74. The 1971-72 FA Cup heroics did not come without a struggle though. Held at home 2-2 initially, the clubs returned to Oxford City only to battle out a 1-1 draw in the replay. A second replay was then required which was played at neutral Birmingham City, but this too ended 1-1. A third replay was played at neutral Oxford United, and then a fourth replay after that game finished 0-0. Incredibly, the fourth replay also at Oxford United once more finished 0-0. The 5th replay at Aston Villa was finally settled 1-0 in favour of Alvechurch! You can imagine that Oxford City were pretty gutted. Alvechurch's prize was a 1st Round Proper tie against Aldershot, which they lost 4-2 in Aldershot. Alvechurch knocked Barry Town out at the 3rd Qualifying Round stage, 3-1 at home, in 1975-76.

Ashford Town 1960-61
First met Barry Town in the 1960-61 Southern League First Division after Barry had been relegated from the Premier Division. In 1972-73 Ashford Town reached the FA Trophy Semi-Final after beating Bangor City 3-2 in the Quarter Final, before losing out to Scarborough. Ashford also have a decent FA Cup record reaching both the First Round and Second Round on numerous occasions. In 1961-62 Ashford United lost 3-0 to Queens Park Rangers in the FA Cup 2nd Round - Barry's conquerors in the 1st Round Replay in the previous Round. In 1966-67 Ashford reached the FA Cup 2nd Round again, this time losing out to Swindon Town. Currently, Ashford are plying their trade in the Southern League 'Dr Martins League' Eastern Division.
