Brighton Barbarians (Under 14s) – Season 2009 /2010
Brighton vs Hove – Sussex A League 8/11/09
A wet day in Hove for the second league match of the season saw the
Baa Baas chalk up their second win by 15 points to nil. In wet
conditions, the team weathered some early pressure, with the Hove
pack dominating for the first 5 minutes or so. After this the Baa Baas
were pretty much camped out in the Hove half for the rest of the
game. Unable to translate territory and possession into points,
however, the teams reached half time with the score tied at 0 – 0.
Nine minutes into the second half, Brighton opened the scoring with
a try by Luke in the left corner. This was followed six minutes later
by a try by Finn, running down the wing to score in the right corner.
The third try came from the best move of the match with some great
running and passing culminating with Charlie touching down in the left
corner.
Despite a high number of handling errors, due to the slippery
conditions, this was another solid team performance with
contributions from everyone on the pitch. It was particularly
gratifying not to concede any points for the second successive match
and the Baa Baas move to the top of the league with 9 points from 2
games.
Brighton Barbarians (Under 14s) – Season 2009 /2010
Brighton vs Haywards Heath – Sussex A League 18/10/09
On a day that the sun shone at Waterhall, so did the Brighton Barbarians as they faced Haywards Heath for the first league fixture of the 2009 / 2010 season. For the first time this season, the coaches were able to field their strongest side to contest this important opening league game with all players now being fit and available for selection.
The Baa Baas opened the scoring 7 minutes into the game with Luke breaking through to touch down between the posts and Lucas kicking a straightforward conversion. The second try on 18 minutes saw Lucas collect the ball in his own half, carry it into the Heath 22 and pass to Luke who completed the move to touch down wide on the left side of the field. Four minutes later, a blistering run by Finn on the right wing saw him leave the opposition’s players in his wake and he ran the ball in between the posts for try number three. Another successful conversion by Lucas meant that Brighton led 19 – 0 at the halfway stage.
Five minutes into the second half, a try right in the left corner by Lucas increased the lead to 24 – 0 but then some sustained pressure by Haywards Heath led to 5 minutes of resolute defending right on the Baa Baas try line. Heath, however, failed to capitalize and eventually Brighton broke free to relieve the pressure. Njoku added one further try for the Baa Baas (converted by Lucas) late in the second half. This was followed by more stout defending with Heath, again, failing to break through and Brighton eventually running out 31 – 0 winners to get the league season off to a solid start.
A very good all round team performance, with contributions from every position.
The forwards more than held their own against the Heath pack and the backs looked confident and well organized. Charlie, at full back, and the wingers, Finn (right) and William (left), performed well with reliable ball handling and some impressive running. The rolling substitutes also played their part and deserve their share of the credit for a very positive start to the league season.
