General Secretary's Report
Congratulations
to all the clubs and individuals that had a successful season in 2005/06.
The number of
member clubs in the Association is now dropped to 18 since two clubs left the
Association but only one new club, Parklands B C joined. More clubs would strengthen
the Association and I would ask everyone to encourage any other clubs they may
know of to consider joining.
Last season
was the 75th year of the Association and a special committee was set up to
arrange some special events. These included a Rededication Service, a Fun
Night, a special Presentation Dance and fund raising by producing 75 year
T-shirts for sale. I would like to thank those who helped me on the committee,
David Gillespie, Nan How, Ann Liddell, Liz McFarlane and Katrina Merrilees, who
all put in a lot of work, and also those individuals who made donations to the
events. However, the response from club members to these events was
disappointing since the Fun Night had to be cancelled and the number attending
the remaining events was lower than expected.
There are
still some problems being encountered by the Divisional Secretaries with delays
in returning match score sheets. Please note that within 7 days the score sheet
must be returned to the Divisional Secretary. The score sheet has been amended
to include the name of the club submitting the sheet. Please also note that, to
help the Divisional Secretaries, the sheets should be completed neatly with the
scores of the completed games and the totals, points and games, completed. It
is acceptable for the signed score sheets to be e-mailed to the Divisional
Secretary where they have a published e-mail address. These are given in the
Divisional Secretaries Page of the Handbook (Page 5). If this method is used it
would be useful if a copy of the e-mail is sent to me to keep the league tables
on the web page up to date.
With respect
to the tournaments run by the Association, these were all very successful with
some new winners. Although the tournaments ran at a financial loss this was due
to the Executive Committee’s decision to subsidise the tournaments and keep
entry fees low to encourage players to enter. This is on the basis of the
Association’s healthy balance sheet. Please take full advantage and enter the
tournaments and take part in these enjoyable events!
The Annual
Presentation Dance was held in April at the Power League in Glasgow and,
although the numbers attending were disappointing, those present had a very
good night. Please try to attend this season’s dance since any profit is used to
help run the Association. Details will be made available to your club secretary
later in the season.
This coming
season sees the possible introduction into the league fixtures of the change in
the scoring system adopted by the International Badminton Federation and
endorsed by BADMINTONscotland. However, late news is that at a Special Meeting
held on 28 September it was decided to continue with the old scoring system.
I would like
everyone to note the Web site for the Association is continuing with the
Constitution and Rules, the handbook, fixtures, league tables, results, some
history of the Association and information for clubs wishing to join.

Jim McCulloch
