Introduction to Astrology
The History of Astrology
The type of astrology that we know today is about 2000 years old although there
are records of an earlier form of it going back some 5000 years. Initially,
astrology was a system of predicting times and seasons mainly for agriculture.
Today it has developed into a sophisticated method of analysis, not only for
assessing human characteristics and behaviour, but also for analysing business
growth and financial trends on the stock market. In fact, 'Financial Astrology'
has been the subject of much scientific research and development over the last
fifty years.
A Combination of Sciences
Astrology is a combination of several other sciences, including astronomy,
numerology, and psychology. It is the study of 'Time and Space'. For example: a
'day' is the time taken by the earth to complete one spin on it's axis. A
'month' is the time taken by the Moon to orbit the earth. A 'year' is the time
taken by the earth to orbit the sun. It is the complicated interrelationship
between these cycles that forms the backbone of astrology.
Analysis and Prediction
Astrology has two distinct functions. Firstly, it provides a system of analysis,
and secondly, because it is a time based system, it also provides a means of
assessing future trends for that which it has been used to analyse.
For example: if we use it to analyse a human being, we can not only produce a
detailed character profile showing that particular individual's strengths,
weaknesses, talents etc. and their true path and purpose in life, but we can
also see how that potential will manifest at any given future time and therefore
affect that individual's career, relationships, finances, etc. etc.
What exactly is 'your star sign'?
Which Sign?
Most people know which star sign they belong to, but what does that mean? What
exactly do we mean when we refer to your 'star sign'?
Newspaper Astrology
The idea that everyone belongs to just one particular sign was promoted by the
'lucky stars' writers in newspapers and magazines. It was done so that everyone
could identify with one particular group and therefore gave writers the
opportunity to 'tell fortunes'. These columns are only for fun and have
entertainment value only. Obviously, without your data and personal details no
writer could not possibly make any comments that relate to you personally.
Serious astrology is based on your personal horoscope (your birth chart). Each
birth chart is unique to the individual, like a fingerprint, there is no other
exactly like it. However, to calculate your birth chart we need your personal
data and it is therefore impossible to do this for each individual in a
newspaper or magazine.
One of many
The correct name for your so called ‘star sign’ is your ‘Sun-Sign’. It is the
sign of the Zodiac that the sun was in when you were born. During interpretation
this sign is very important but it is not the only important sign in your
horoscope. Equally important is your Moon-Sign. The Moon represents your inner
nature whereas the Sun represents your outer nature (in psychological terms,
your Anima and Animus respectively).
The Complete Picture
Your horoscope (birth chart) shows the complete picture, you’re Sun sign, your
Moon sign and arguably the most important sign of all, your Rising-sign. It is
through this sign that all your psychic energy is focused and therefore shows
how you will perceive the world around you and how you will respond to it. Your
horoscope also shows the positions of all the planets and how they will
influence your twelve astrological houses.
Starsigns versus Horoscopes
Lucky
stars or Horoscopes?
Most people read their stars in newspapers and magazines and believe that they
are reading their 'horoscope'. This is not so. The word ‘Horoscope’ means
‘life-map’ or ‘birth chart’ and each one has to be calculated for the individual
concerned and involves many hours of work. Horoscopes are like finger prints,
there are no two exactly the same and each one has to be calculated from your
own personal data.
Harmless or very damaging?
Star signs in newspapers and magazines are only for fun and cannot be taken
seriously as they are not based on your horoscope. Although these columns are
very popular they serve no useful purpose and give the impression that there is
nothing more to astrology. As you will see, applied correctly, astrology is one
of the most useful and helpful of all subjects. Many successful people use
astrology to help them in all areas of their lives. Unfortunately, others only
turn to it in desperation after everything else has failed them.
Scientific Fact
It is a scientific fact that the planets correlate with certain areas of the
human psyche and therefore with human behaviour. By examining each planet in
your horoscope, the signs and houses they are positioned in and their angular
relationship to each other, we can produce a detailed character profile and an
assessment of future trends in the life of any individual.
Life Map (Horoscope)
To go through life without your birth chart is like going on a long journey
without a map. Understanding your birth chart can save you from taking many
wrong turns, it shows you your true path in life, it shows your hidden strengths
and abilities, your ideal partner, and most important of all it shows the future
trends in your life! This is equally true for a business, an organization, a
relationships or a venture as horoscopes can be calculated for any of these
things.
FAQ's
Q) How can astrology help me in my everyday life?
A) Astrology is like a mirror, it allows us to see areas of ourselves that we
could not otherwise see. It shows our inner strengths, our weaknesses, our
hidden talents, our ideal partner and our true path in life. Astrology gives us
information about ourselves that is not available from any other source.
Q) What is a Horoscope?
A) Contrary to common belief, you cannot read your 'Horoscope' in a newspaper or
magazine. The word 'Horoscope' means 'life-map' or 'birth chart' and each one
has to be calculated for the individual concerned. When analysed and interpreted
correctly a birth chart gives us an advantage that we could not get by any other
means. Because astrology is a time based system it can also be used to assess
our future. It shows us when and when not to make those important changes in our
lives.
Q What are 'Transits'?
A) As the planets continually move around the Zodiac they sometimes make contact
with important points in our birth chart. As everyone's birthchart is different
these contacts are different for each individual. These contacts are called
'Transits' and when they happen they can trigger the potential shown in your
chart. This often manifests as an important event or change in our lives.
Q)
How do 'aspects' work?
A)
Aspects are the angular relationships between planets in a birth chart. If two
planets are side by side, opposite each other, or at right angles to each other
they interact. The theory of how aspects work is found in the science of
numerology.
Transits
Introduction to Transits
The potential shown in a birth-chart can lie dormant for years, then suddenly,
for no apparent reason it bursts into life. A sudden unexpected change occurs in
your career, or in a relationship, or maybe in your finances. These changes can
always be attributed to ‘transits’. A transit is simply a planet passing over an
important point in your chart. As everyone's chart is different, transits affect
us all in different ways and at different times.
Duration
How long the effect of the transit will last depends on the transiting planet
(the one passing over). If it is a slow moving planet like Neptune or Pluto the
effect can last for several months, but if it is one of the fast moving, so
called 'personal planets' like Mars or Venus, the effect can be over in days.
Transits are effective when they form a major aspect to any planet in your birth
chart. For example: you can expect things connected with Venus (money, love,
luxuries etc.) to be more active at a time in your life when Jupiter
(opportunity) or Mars (action) are passing over Venus in your birthchart and
forming a conjunction. Oppositions, squares, trines and sextiles would also have
a similar effect but not as strong. Transits are usually effective within an orb
of 1°.
Simple Prediction
The technique of using transits is one of the oldest in astrology. It is a
simple and straight forward task to look up the planetary positions (in the
ephemeris) for any future time and then compare them to your chart to see if any
aspects are formed. Sometimes a transit
will trigger something in your horoscope that has lay dormant for many years.
Transits can activate or inhibit the potential of your chart, therefore some
transits are very helpful while others are, at the very least, a nuisance.
Monitoring how they affect your life is one of the most fascinating areas of
astrology and also one of the most useful.
The Aspects
The Aspects
The 'aspects' are the most important of all factors when interpreting a birth
chart, but also probably the most difficult to understand. An aspect is the
distance between two or more planets. When two planets are a specific distance
apart they are said to be in aspect. So what are these distances?
Major aspects
At this stage I am only going to deal with the major aspects, the conjunction,
the opposition, the square, the trine and the sextile. If two planets are close
together (side by side) in the Zodiac they are said to be 'conjunct'. If they
are opposite each other (180° apart) they are said to be in 'opposition'. Two
planets 90° from each other are in a 'square' aspect and if they are 120° apart
they are in a 'trine' aspect. Finally, if two planets are 60° apart they are in
a 'sextile' aspect.
Interaction
When two (or more) planets are 'in aspect' they interact with each other.
Ideally all the planets in your chart should be in aspect so that their
principles are integrated into your psyche. The best we can hope for however, is
that each planet forms at least one aspect to one other planet. Some aspects are
good (harmonious), others are difficult. However, any aspect (even a difficult
one) is better than no aspect at all. For example: In the case of Mars and
Saturn the energy of Mars would be given some control, some structure or
framework through which to express itself. The ease or difficulty of this
control depends on the type of aspect formed between the two planets.
The Buddha on Belief - from the Kalama Sutta
"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not
believe simply because it has been handed down for many generations. Do not
believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many. Do not
believe in anything simply because it is written in Holy Scriptures. Do not
believe in anything merely on the authority of Teachers, elders or wise men.
Believe only after careful observation and analysis, when you find that it
agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all.
Then accept it and live up to it."
