My 4 x Great-Grandfather, Thomas Woodhouse was born about 1810 in Stockport in Cheshire. His father's name was James Woodhouse, a Silk Dresser by profession. Thomas married an unknown woman and they had one child, James (my 3 x great-grandfather) born about 1833, also in Stockport. The reason she is unknown, is that I can find no record of their son's birth or Baptism, and she presumably died quite shortly after this, as Thomas remarried before the time of the 1841 census, and is recorded on the marriage certificate as being a widower.

Thomas Woodhouse married Jane Ray on the 23rd June 1839 at the Parish Church in Lancaster. She was born in Lancaster in 1819, to parents Nancy and Peter Woods Ray.

Although I cannot find Thomas Woodhouse on the 1841 census of England, I have located his wife. She is living with their daughter Martha, at 105 Damside Street in Lancaster. (This can be seen on the map left, in the northwest corner of the city). It would have been shortly after this, that their son William was born. He was born in Edinburgh in Scotland, so it may that Thomas Woodhouse was working there at the time of the 1841 census, and was joined later by his wife before she gave birth. Hopefully, I will know for sure when the 1841 census' get released with full indexes.

Ten years later, in the census of 1851, the family was still living at 105 Damside St in Lancaster. This time, joined by Thomas Woodhouse and his eldest son James. Both recorded as having the same profession, silk dresser. It was the same situation by the time of the 1861 census, although their son James was now married and had moved out. In 1871 however, Thomas was again missing from the household, although the family were still living in Damside St.

Thomas was recorded as a boarder in the house of Hannah Walmsley, in the village of Galgate, just south of Lancaster. Thomas died three years later in 1874, aged 63. In 1881, his widow Jane was still residing in Lancaster, although she had moved to Portland Street, in the south of the city. She died in Lancaster in 1884.

St Michaels Parish Church Cockerham

James Woodhouse was born about 1833 in Stockport, Cheshire. His mother died before he reached the age of six, and he then lived with his father Thomas and his second wife in Lancaster. Sometime during the early 1850's, James went to live in the village of Galgate, just south of Lancaster. He married Charlotte Roberts on 17th February 1855 at the Parish Church in the nearby village of Cockerham. She was born on the 21st October 1832 in Galgate, to parents William Roberts and Ann Laidley.

Around 1858-59 James & Charlotte moved south and settled in the town of Rochdale. They lived at 6 Portland Street in the Wardleworth area of Rochdale. Here they resided for more than 30 years, raising seven children. James Woodhouse died on the 26th November 1894 at 36 Merefield Terrace in Rochdale. The cause of death was stated as 'Phthisis', another name for tuberculosis.

His wife Charlotte later remarried in 1899 to John Bradburn, a landscape gardener born in Rochdale about 1829 to parents, James & Betty Bradburn. Charlotte died in Rochdale in 1915, aged 82.

Children of James & Charlotte Woodhouse

Alice Ann Woodhouse (1855-1916)

Alice was born in the village of Galgate, Lancashire on the 16th September 1855. She married Joseph Stansfield in 1875 at Rochdale Register Office. He was born about 1853 in Todmorden, to parents William Stansfield & Sarah Turner. Joseph's occupation was clogger. The family lived in Rochdale at addresses including Hopwood Place in Wardleworth, Adelaide Street and Dixon Street in Castleton. They had four children, Thomas, William, Sarah and James, all born in Rochdale. Joseph Stansfield died in Rochdale in 1901, aged 46. Alice Ann died in Rochdale in 1916.

Sarah Jane Woodhouse (1858-1927)

Sarah Jane was born in the village of Galgate, Lancashire in 1858. In 1879 she gave birth to an illegitimate child named Bessie Catterall Woodhouse. It is probable the name Catterall was the father's surname. Sarah Jane married in 1891 to Thomas Matthews, a cotton worker born about 1851 in Rochdale. Together they had two daughters, Lizzie and Nora, both also born in Rochdale. In 1901 they lived at Hayworth Place in Wardleworth. Sarah Jane later left her husband, who was apparently a drunkard, to live with her daughters in Sydney Street in Sudden. She died in Rochdale in 1927, aged 69.

Betsy Woodhouse (1859 -

Betsy was born in Wardleworth, Rochdale in 1859. She married Joshua Heap in 1878 at Rochdale Register Office. He was born in 1858 in Castleton, Rochdale to parents John & Jane Heap. Betsy and Joshua had five children, Charlotte, John, Walter, Elizabeth & Tom. The family lived in Rochdale at addresses including Baillie Street in Wardleworth, and Portland Street, next door to Betsy's parents. Apparently Betsy and her mother Charlotte, used to sit and drink pennorths of stout in the Vulcan Inn. Betsy ran off with Ben Mortimore, 'a perfect gentlemen', who was also partial to a glass. The children of Joshua and Betsy Heap all eventually emigrated to Ontario, Canada. Joshua Heap died in Rochdale in 1921, aged 62.

Thomas Woodhouse (1861-1888)

Thomas was born in Wardleworth, Rochdale in 1861. He married Laura Butterworth on the 3rd October 1885 at the Milton Congregational Church in Smith St, Rochdale. She was born in 1864 in Rochdale to parents Henry Dean Butterworth and Mary Hamer. Henry Dean Butterworth was an auctioneer and furniture dealer, who ran a shop in Yorkshire Street in Rochdale. Thomas and Laura had two children, Ethel and Harold, both born in Rochdale. Tragically, Thomas Woodhouse died, aged only 26, on the 28th June 1888, at Roach Mills Cottages in Rochdale. Cause of death was epilepsy. Further tragedy struck in 1895, when his daughter Ethel died, aged only 9 years. Laura had married again in 1894 to William Ashton, a butcher from Heywood in Lancashire. Together they had two children, Edith and Frank Ashton. The 1901 census puts the family at 37 Torrington Street in Heywood. Laura died there in 1935, aged 71.

Mary Ellen Woodhouse (1868-1944)

Mary Ellen, affectionately called Polly, was born in Wardleworth in Rochdale in 1868. She married Robert Thomas Butterworth in 1897 in Rochdale. He was born in 1868 in Rochdale to parents, James Butterworth & Margaret Whittaker. The couple had no children, and in 1901 were living at 60 Syke Road in Wardleworth, where Robert's occupation was stated as 'school attendance officer'. He was later a prominent figure in Rochdale, as he became the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages. Robert Butterworth died in 1943. Mary Ellen died shortly after in 1944, aged 76. She was apparently the first woman in Rochdale to be cremated.

Phoebe Thompson Woodhouse (1874-1931)

Phoebe was born in Wardleworth Rochdale in 1874. She married Mark Channon in Rochdale in 1901. He was a landscape gardener working at Butterworth Hall in Rochdale, and was born at Honiton, Devon in 1876 to parents John Channon & Susannah Pike. Mark & Phoebe moved to the East Retford registration district in Nottinghamshire, where they had three children, Charles Haddon, Edith and Noel. They later moved to the village of Nether Langwith near Worksop. Their son Charles died there in 1931 of tuberculosis, aged only 28. Phoebe died later in the same year, aged 56. Mark Channon died in the village in 1942.
