John Vincent was born about 1807 at Tivetshall St Mary in Norfolk. He married Elizabeth Rivett on the 15th January 1835, also in Tivetshall St Mary. Elizabeth Rivett was born in 1814 at nearby Stratton St Mary, to parents William Rivett & Emily Tubby. Their 1841, 1851 and 1871 census returns all place them in the village of Tivetshall St Mary, where John died in 1873. Of their seven children, at least four travelled north and settled in the counties of Yorkshire. The eldest George married in 1869 to Dora Jackson in the village of Preston by Hedon in East Yorkshire. Their three children were all born in Keyingham. The couple later lived in Withernsea, also in East Yorkshire. John and Elizabeth's eldest daughter Mary Ann married Zachariah Riches in Tivetshall St Mary, Norfolk in 1856. Although their four children were also born in Tivetshall St Mary, they too eventually travelled north to Yorkshire. The 1871, 1881 & 1891 census put Mary Ann Riches (nee Vincent) in the city of Sheffield. Two other children also settled in Yorkshire. James Vincent lived in Castleford where he married an Emma Varden. The youngest Frederick married in 1872 to Phoebe Holgate. They lived in Nether Hallam, near Sheffield. Of the children who did not move north, the second eldest John Vincent travelled south to the county of Suffolk, where he married Eliza Stammers-More. Although they initially lived in Ipswich, they later settled in the town of Beccles. The only son left was William Vincent (my great great grandfather), who stayed in the village of Tivetshall St Mary, Norfolk. |

By 1901 (census below) however, he is living with James and Emma Vincent at 27 Hugh Street in Castleford, West Yorkshire. On the census return of that year their relationship is stated as cousins, when in fact they are uncle and nephew. Frederick's occupation was colliery labourer. |

A few years later, Frederick had moved even further north to Northumberland and was living in Holywell Village near Seaton Delaval, North Tyneside. It was there on the 19th September 1906 at the Primitive Methodist Church in Seaton Delaval that he married Elizabeth Frances Bateman. She was born in Nelsonville in Ohio, USA in 1884 to parents William Bateman & Ann Grundy. |
