Henry Grundy was born about 1822 at Tinkler Row, Lamesley in County Durham. He married Frances Cutter at All Saints Church in Newcastle, on the 15th March 1841. She was born in 1815 at Gosforth in Newcastle, to parents Joseph Cutter & Ann Barron. Together they had two children John & Ann born in Gateshead Low Fell. Unfortunately, Frances Grundy died in 1846, shortly after their daughter Ann's birth. Henry married soon after to Alice Seymour. She was born about 1820 at Lamesley, County Durham. Henry worked as a coal miner and the family lived in small mining villages in County Durham including Eighton Banks, South Pelaw, and Bewicke Main. Henry had another four children by Alice, until her death in 1878. |
Again Henry married soon after, to his third wife Agnes Gibson Stuart. They married on the 29th April 1878 at the Christchurch in Shieldfield, Newcastle upon Tyne. Agnes was born about 1842 in South Shields. Henry's occupation on the marriage certificate was given as publican, and it appears that, for a few years he was landlord at the Queens Head pub in the centre of Chester Le Street, in County Durham. Henry and Agnes had two children together, Henry and Jane Nellie. By 1891 Henry was again working as a coal miner, the family now living in the village of Dunston, just west of Gateshead. The 1901 census puts the family at 10 Hyde Park St in Gateshead., Henry was now retired. Henry Grundy died in Gateshead four years later on the 16th October 1905 and was buried in Dunston. His third wife Agnes Grundy passed away in 1932 aged 89. She was preceded in death by their two children, Henry & Jane. Jane died in 1912 aged only 31, and Henry was killed during World War 1 on the 15th September 1916 at the Battle of the Somme. |
