James Comerford ( or Commerford, Cummerford ) was born in Ireland about 1832. He married Susan Daly in August of 1861 in the Parish of Killan(e) (now called Shercock), in County Cavan, Ireland. She was also born in Ireland, to parents Michael Daly ( or Dalley, Daily, Daillie ) and Bridget Brady.

After the birth of their first child Annie, they moved from Ireland to Scotland. and settled in the village of Roslin, just south of Edinburgh, in the county of Midlothian. It is probable that they were following Susan's elder sister, Ann Daly, who had moved to Scotland some years earlier. She had married Edward Fairley in 1859, and they too lived in Roslin.

James and Susan had another three children, John, Mary, and Bridget, all born in the village of Roslin. Susan Comerford nee Daly, passed away in the village just a few years later, aged only 44 years. She died on the 21st December 1874, the cause of death was influenza, from which she had been suffering for three weeks.

James Comerford died of typhoid fever in Roslin, on the 1st January 1883. Tragically, this day also happened to be the date of his daughter Bridget's 14th birthday, and the day after his eldest daughter's wedding.

COMERFORD SURNAME

This name is of an English village in Staffordshire. It has been in Ireland from 1210 and since has been one of the most distinguished Irish families, particularly in the counties of Kilkenny and Waterford where they first settled. By the seventeenth century they were numerous there and in parts of Co. Tipperary. In Irish speech and documents the Comerford's or Quemerford's were called Comartún. In Counties Cavan and Longford the name has been used as an anglicized form of MacCumascaigh, a Breffny surname normally MacCumiskey or Cumesky in English.

ROSLIN, MIDLOTHIAN

Annie Comerford  married Peter Crorkin on the 31st December 1882 at the Catholic Church in nearby Loanhead. They had six children (Susan, Christina, Peter, Annie, Charles, James) and lived in Mid Calder. Annie died there on the 10th January 1912, at the age of 48. The Crorkin family later lived in New Woolford's in South Lanarkshire, Edinburgh and Fife. Peter Crorkin died in Kelty Fife in 1928, aged 73 years.

Of John Comerford, nothing is known after his appearance as a witness at his sister Annie's wedding in 1882. I can neither find him in the 1891 or 1901 census of Scotland or England. Although, there is an entry in the Civil Registration of Deaths for England and Wales, of a John Comerford who died in Gateshead in 1930 aged 65.

In the 1891 census of Scotland, Mary Comerford is recorded living with the family of Ann Fairley nee Daly, her mother's sister, in Roslin. Mary married Michael Donnelly on the 30th November 1893 at Broxburn Catholic Church in the Parish of Uphall, Linlithgow. They had four children (Mary Ann, James, Margaret, Susan) and later lived in the village of Seafield near Livingstone in West Lothian. Mary passed away on the 6th May 1919 in Tarbrax in South Lanarkshire. Cause of death given simply as 'cardiac degeneration'.
