Daniel & Alice Bateman emigrated to America in 1864. They sailed from Liverpool aboard the ship ' Lawrence ', arriving in New York on the 22nd July 1864. It is likely that they were following their three eldest children, who had emigrated to America some seven years earlier. Daniel & Alice took with them all the remaining children, except for their son William, who stayed behind in England, having only recently married. After arriving in America, Daniel continued to work in the coal mining industry. The following 1870 census has them living in the township of Clifton, Mason County in the state of West Virginia. Ten years later in 1880, they are living in Nelsonville in Athens County, Ohio. Daniel Bateman died in Nelsonville, Ohio on the 13th September 1881 aged 75 years. His wife Alice also died in Nelsonville, on the 2nd July 1898, aged 83 years. |
