General Tips

Worm in glass house shouldn't throw grenade!

Positioning

The position of your worms is the most important aspect to consider. It should be the first thing you do when starting a match, before you even fire a weapon. You may need to jump to get into the best locations, see the jumping section for more tips on that. The best locations depend on the weapons involved, and on the locations of enemy worms, but generally good locations are ones that have the following criteria.

Good Locations:

  • Somewhere with sufficient cover
  • Somewhere with a good field of view
  • Away from water
  • On high ground
Generally this means you have to move to a location with a good view, fire your weapon, and then quickly move back into cover. It usually means not being able to watch where your shot goes, but doing this will prolong your worms' life! Bare in mind that the terrain is fully deformable, so what may be a good location at one time could rapidly turn into an awful location.

Bad Locations:
  • Sat atop a hill with water all around. One good shot will send you flying into the water!
  • Overlooking the waters edge. Again you will be in the water before you know it.
  • In a hole. It is much easier to drop grenades into a hole than anywhere else, also it might only take one grenade to take the bottom out of the hole, plopping you into the water.
  • Sitting near flame barrels. When barrels explode they throw you a lot further than a normal weapon would, and also damage you at the same time! If you see an enemy worm near one, blow it up and watch them fly (hopefully into water far away!).

Weapon Selection

This is another key aspect to consider. It depends on what weapons are available on the map, and is more applicable in the single player missions. If an opponent has low health, use a weapon that does only sufficient damage to take them out. If an opponent is on the edge of a cliff don't waste a dragon punch on them, prod them off! Also remember the shotgun! It deals 25 damage per shot, but you get 2 shots. If there are 2 worms both on less than 25, you can kill 2 worms with 1 gun! If a worm is sitting in a hard to hit place, such as on a small pole with nothing surrounding it, shotgun them off it and watch their mood change. Try to save the rare weapons for when you really need them.

Wind

The wind affects certain weapons and utilities. The wind display is in the bottom right hand corner, it points in the direction that the wind is blowing. The faster it spins, the stronger the wind. When firing affected weapons you should take this into account and adjust your aim accordingly.

Affects: Bazooka, Parachute

Jumping

Jumping is a skill in itself. Knowing the distance and height of different jump types can give you the upper hand in reaching crucial points. After you have jumped you can use the movement keys to steer yourself a little to correct your trajectory. The CPU AI is quite intelligent when it comes to jumping, it does make mistakes too sometimes though.

Jump Types:

  • Jump Key - Does a normal, fairly long jump. You can steer yourself a little while in the air by using the movement keys.
  • Double Jump Key - Causes you to do a high back flip, it doesn't cover as much distance as a normal jump though. Useful for getting to higher locations. You can also hold down a movement key as you do the double jump key to perform a flip in that direction instead.
  • Hold Jump Key - Does a jump straight up. Useful for jumping onto a higher area when on a narrow ledge by using movement keys after you jump.

Camera

There are 3 types of camera view; third person, first person and blimp mode. Third person is the default view when you are controlling a worm, it is also the only view in which you can move your worm around the terrain in. First person is the view from the worms eyes, suitable for aiming the majority of weapons. Blimp mode is the birds eye view which allows you to see all over the map.

Tips:

  • In blimp mode you can also hold down control to move the camera around, most useful for getting a better angle!
