Such a long journey for such small wormsThe worms are getting on a bit, but they're looking more fresh-faced than ever! How did they get to this stage though?
It all began back in 1995 when Team17 released the first Worms game to the masses. It contained the same basic elements as the newer versions, but at the time was pretty unique. The graphics were ok for the time, but the emphasis was more on game play. Who would have thought that a game where worms armed with lethal weapons would be so much fun to play? Team17 obviously, and due to the addictiveness of the game it quickly gathered a following of die-hard fans (including myself).
Later in 1995, Team17 released an add-on pack called "Worms Reinforcements" which contained new weapons and single player missions. More hours of peoples lives were lost as they did battle on the worms playing field.
In 1996 "Worms" and "Worms Reinforcements" were joined together in a single package called "Worms United". People who had missed out on the originals had a chance to save some money and grab both together.
"Worms: The Directors Cut" was released in 1997, which saw the addition of new weapons, audio, and the ability to draw your own levels!
Look at me; I actually look like a worm! After releasing the directors cut in 1997, the worms evolved to take on a brand new cartoonish look in the release of "Worms 2". It contained the same mechanics and game play, but included much nicer graphics and brand new weapons! It also saw the addition of an Internet playing mode where you could pit your skills against people from all around the world! People started losing more sleep than ever before, and worms is single handedly responsible for the decline of the peoples health worldwide (ok maybe not, but it was very addictive ;).
Two years later, in 1999, we were blessed with the release of "Worms Armageddon", in which the team added extra weapons and features to the game and billed it as "The best worms games ever", to which most people whole heartedly agreed!
A Year later, in 2000, Dreamcast owners were given the opportunity to cash in on the worms experience when Team17 released "Worms World Party". This was however more of a glorified Worms Armageddon, and didn't contain that much in the way of new features.
A long 3 years later we have come to the Worms3D stage. It has taken on a whole new look while still maintaining the same game play elements as all the previous versions! Read more specifics about it in the About Worms 3D section.
