Although now not so common in England now and is declining you might see a

grass snake around your pond. These snakes are totally harmless they prey on

frogs, fish, small birds and mammals. It is more likely you will see a grass snake

in a rural area. If you want to try and incourage grass snake a large open compost

heap is a good way as this provides warmth and is a place for the grass snake to

lay their eggs. If you suspect their is a grass snake coming to your pond and you

want to encourage it then putting out a few strips of meat might encourage the

snake to stay. However it is possible that other animals will get the meat first

If you do see a snake like creature it is more likely to a slow-worm this creature

looks like a snake but it is actually a lizard. The slow-worm preys on slugs and

invertebrates.
