I would say that for a wildlife pond a flexible liner is often the best choice of

material for building the pond. The advantages of using a flexible liner is that you 

have an unlimited range of designs for your pond and the type of design you

need for a wildlife pond is not usually available in the preformed type of liner. The

only time when a preformed liner is best is when there is very stony ground. Most

liners are made of PVC  which is durable and cheaper than pre-formed pond

liners. Installing a flexible pond liner is very easy  (the hard bit is digging the

whole). When installing a pond liner make sure there is  at least 3 cm of sand

between the liner and the soil this is essential as it should prevent the liner from

getting ruptured. The last bit is  working out how much liner you Need. This is

done by working out the following:

Length of liner equals:

Length + 2 * depth +2 * edge width 

Width of liner  equals:

Width + 2 *depth + 2 * edge width
